serko0Hello everyone, I have several Malm furniture pieces from Ikea made of particleboard and I want to maintain them properly to keep them looking good for as long as possible and to prevent damage from moisture or everyday wear. My question is: Which care methods are specifically recommended for Malm furniture fronts made of particleboard? Are there any cleaning agents or maintenance products I should avoid or preferably use? I am also interested in how to best repair small scratches or signs of wear without damaging the surface. I look forward to your experiences and tips!

As long as you use a mild detergent and don’t soak the furniture, there shouldn’t be any problems. Of course, you can avoid harsh cleaners, but I doubt expensive specialty products would make much difference. And regarding scratches: there’s no miracle cream for that either – a bit of careful work and, if necessary, repainting is the most honest approach.

As long as you use a mild cleaning agent and don’t soak the furniture completely, nothing should really happen. While this is a reasonable approach, I wonder if "mild" alone is sufficient. Which ingredients in cleaners are actually harmful or safe for the melamine resin-coated surfaces of Malm furniture? Additionally, how does regular maintenance specifically affect the durability of the surface? References or manufacturer recommendations on this would be helpful to support our assessments.
For the proper care of Malm furniture made from particle board with a melamine resin-coated surface, the following points should generally be observed:
1. Cleaning method: Use a lightly damp, non-abrasive cloth with warm water and mild dish soap. Strong alkaline or acidic cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage the surface.
2. Moisture: Never clean with excessive water, as particle board is sensitive to moisture penetration, which can cause swelling.
3. Scratches and superficial wear: Small scratches cannot be removed from melamine by gently polishing with a polish, as the coating is firm and hard. Special repair kits for melamine surfaces are more suitable, or for more severe damage, spot retouching with matching touch-up paint.
The manufacturer recommendations from Ikea confirm this approach. Additionally, abrasive sponges or harsh CLEANING AGENTS should not be used.

Use a slightly damp, non-abrasive cloth with warm water and mild dish soap. This is the most important factor. I would add that after cleaning, the surface should be wiped down with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to avoid any remaining moisture. Although the particle board is coated, small damages along the edges are the weak point.
Regarding scratches: when micro-damages occur, they are usually superficial and appear as dull spots. Light polishing with a wax-based furniture polish can restore the shine. Products based on plastic or silicone usually do not provide a lasting effect.

Light polishing with a wax-based furniture polish can restore the shine. This is important because many users resort to harsh chemical agents that can damage the melamine resin-coated surface. Furniture waxes fill in small imperfections and also provide additional protection against moisture.
I also recommend using touch-up markers or pens, which are available at hardware stores for coated furniture, to effectively conceal minor scratches.
