Hello everyone,
I noticed that one of the hinges on the IKEA Malm bed frame is no longer working properly. More specifically, the hinge hardly moves anymore, and the flap does not close smoothly. I suspect that either the bearing or one of the springs is broken because it sticks quite a bit and makes unpleasant noises when I try to open or close the flap.
I would prefer not to take the entire bed apart if it’s not necessary and wonder if the hinges can be repaired somehow or if a complete replacement is required. Does anyone have experience with faulty MALM hinges? Are there compatible replacement parts available, or is it usually better to install hinges from hardware stores?
I would be very grateful for practical tips, exact instructions on disassembly, or advice on buying replacements—especially tips on loosening the screws gently without damaging the wood or finish.
Thank you in advance!

Hello nu_ben,
A defective hinge on the MALM is often caused by worn bearings or broken plastic parts. If the hinges squeak or stick, it is recommended to start with a thorough cleaning and apply silicone spray or light machine oil. This improves mobility.
If the hinge mechanism is damaged, IKEA offers replacement hinges in their online shop that are identical to the original parts. A complete replacement is usually the best solution. When doing this, you should carefully loosen the screws, ideally with a suitable screwdriver, to avoid damaging the screw heads.
For installation: Do not tighten the screws too much when screwing them in, as this prevents cracks in the wood. If you remove the hinge completely, you can also check the mounting strips. Sometimes these are damaged, which affects the function.
In summary:
1. Clean and lubricate the hinge
2. Check if replacements are available in the IKEA shop
3. Replace the hinge, carefully loosening the screws
4. Adjust the mechanism and mounting properly
Good luck!

If the hinges are squeaking or sticking, it is recommended to first thoroughly clean them and apply silicone spray or light machine oil.Additionally, here is a brief guide on how to proceed with faulty MALM hinges:
1. Diagnosis: Carefully check where the problem is – is the hinge mechanically stuck, is a spring missing, are parts broken, or is the attachment loose?
2. Preparation: Gather all necessary tools: screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), silicone spray, possibly small pliers, and replacement screws.
3. Disassembly: Carefully loosen the screws. If the screws are difficult to turn or damaged, applying some WD-40 and allowing it to soak for a while can help.
4. Cleaning: Remove old lubricants and dust residues, especially around the joints.
5. Lubrication: Evenly apply silicone spray or a high-quality lubricant and move the hinge to distribute the lubricant well.
6. Replacement: Use IKEA spare parts for defective components, as cheaper substitutes often do not fit properly or are less durable.
7. Assembly: Tighten the screws carefully, avoiding overtightening to prevent material damage.
8. Function test: Open and close the flap several times to check the adjustment and smooth operation.
Common mistakes include overtightening screws or neglecting cleaning, which leads to further wear.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

One more question: I’ve noticed that some MALM hinges seem to have additional small plastic clips or auxiliary parts that tension the spring. Is it advisable to always replace these completely when changing the hinge? Or can they simply be removed from the old hinge and reused?
I’m asking because I have seen that some replacement parts at IKEA are only available as complete sets, so you don’t always know whether to replace the entire hinge or just the spring or something similar.
Does anyone have more experience with this?
