Hello everyone,
I own several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series and am considering how to upgrade them in a practical and visually appealing way. I am especially interested in options to improve stability and functionality with relatively simple methods, without losing the typical Hemnes design. Perhaps someone also knows clever upgrades to modernize drawers or doors, or to make the surfaces more durable.
Thank you very much for your ideas and experiences!

I would suggest playing around with some color accents on Hemnes furniture – for example, swapping out knobs and handles. It immediately gives a fresher feel.
Also, you can protect the surfaces with a matte clear coat to make scratches less visible – basically an everyday upgrade without ruining the design.

- Reinforce the back panels with sturdier MDF boards. Often, the original panels are somewhat thin and tend to warp over time.
- Replace hinges with soft-close models to ensure smoother closing and extend the lifespan.
- For drawers, I recommend switching to high-quality full-extension slides, which can handle more weight and operate more smoothly.
- For those willing to experiment: replace plywood with a thin solid wood panel to maintain character while increasing durability.
Which specific pieces of furniture are you planning to upgrade? Dressers, cabinets, display cases? Depending on that, more specific advice can be given.

Basically, I am focusing on dressers and a large wardrobe. Especially with the dressers, I find the drawers important – they should glide smoothly over a long period and be able to carry more weight. The surface finish is also of interest, as I often have problems with scratches on the edges of the furniture.
Hello everyone! ☀️
I can only agree that simply changing the handles works wonders. Especially with Hemnes, you can quickly see how the style is enhanced with modern handles.
I also like to use protective film on the drawer bottoms, which extends their lifespan by preventing moisture from getting in.
A small idea: why not also add lighting? LED strips under shelves instantly make the whole space cozier and more modern!
