Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased a Malm bed frame from IKEA, and recently several cracks have appeared on the surface and partially at the joints. Since the frame is only about half a year old, I find these cracks quite concerning, especially because they are visually noticeable and also raise doubts about the stability.

My question for you: What is the best way to deal with such cracks in a Malm bed frame? Does anyone have experience with repairs or replacements? Should I possibly contact customer service, or are there any DIY tips to professionally fix the cracks?

I look forward to your helpful advice and suggestions. Thank you!

If the cracks are visible and affect the structural stability, you should contact customer service as soon as possible.

Alternatively, you can fill the areas with wood filler and then paint them decoratively.

I’m unfortunately familiar with the cracks in the bed frame as well – it was really frustrating, especially since I expected the piece of furniture to last longer.

I would advise you not to spend too much time worrying about it and either contact customer support or seal the cracks to prevent further damage. I hope you find a solution soon that gives you peace of mind.

For an objective assessment: The MALM bed frame is usually made of particleboard with a foil coating, which is prone to stress cracks.

Steps to take if cracks appear:
1. Check if the stability is affected. If the frame wobbles or creaks, it poses a safety risk.
2. Minor cracks can be filled and smoothed with wood filler or a wood repair kit.
3. After drying, lightly sand the repaired area and touch it up with matching paint or foil repair sticks.
4. In case of severe structural damage, replacing a part or contacting customer service for a full replacement is advisable.

If you have warranty claims, be sure to contact IKEA and report the damage, preferably with a detailed photo and damage report, even if you cannot post pictures here.

That is correct. From my experience, it can help to use the bed frame in a dry environment with controlled humidity to protect the wood-based material.

If the cracks are superficial, I recommend treating them with a specialized wood filler and then sealing the surface. This will slow down the development of further cracks.

I filled and lightly repainted small cracks in a similar spot on my MALM bed. Since then, there have been no major issues.
