Hello everyone, I have some Ikea Hemnes furniture at home that I would like to customize a bit to make it less standard-looking. So my question is: Are there any proven DIY tips or methods to personalize Ikea HEMNES furniture without completely rebuilding it or buying new, expensive pieces? I am thinking of a combination of simple color changes, using materials or accessories that are easy to implement but still have a big impact. I am interested in all approaches, whether painting, applying decals, changing handles, or creative use of craft techniques. If anyone has experience working with HEMNES furniture and wants to customize it, I would really appreciate practical tips and examples!

Basically, HEMNES furniture is very well suited for customization due to its classic design. I recommend:
- Sanding and repainting in trendy colors, preferably using acrylic or chalk paints to avoid roughening the surface too much.
- Replacing handles or adding brass or leather accents to create a more refined look.
- Using leftover wallpaper or thin fabrics behind glass doors or as a backing panel, if available.
- Emphasizing edges or creating frames by attaching small strips or moldings.
It is important to prepare well by sanding and cleaning before painting to ensure durability. I advise against using tape or stickers permanently, as they usually do not adhere well and leave residue.

Hey Taupi, that sounds really exciting! I recently redesigned my HEMNES wardrobe using chalk paint, and the result turned out fantastic! 🙂

For personalizing, I can only recommend:
- Don’t be afraid of color! It immediately adds a fresh vibe.
- Replace old handles with vintage brass handles; it really upgrades the look!
- Upcycling with wooden strips or small DIY decorative elements also works great.
I believe anyone can create something cool from their furniture with a bit of creativity. Just go for it and try a little experiment! 😊

Light sanding, repainting, replacing handles. Fabric behind glass. Nothing else needed.

That's a good point! I once tried putting stickers on a HEMNES bedside table – unfortunately, it didn’t last long and quickly started to look untidy. On the other hand, temporary solutions can definitely be worth trying if you’re still unsure how far you want to go. I often find it helpful to take small steps and test things first in less visible areas. How do you handle durability issues? Especially with furniture that gets a lot of use, you don’t want to have to keep fixing it all the time.

I love how many ways there are to personalize a HEMNES wardrobe or chest of drawers!
- A little tip: Using chalk paint and wax can create lovely vintage effects that are neither expensive nor complicated.
- Wrapping handles with leather straps is also a great idea for adding more individuality.
- And for those who want to get creative: let your imagination run wild, whether with stencils, patterns, or even small wooden appliqués – the fun is what matters most!
Good luck to everyone who dares to enhance their home with these ideas!
