Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought several MALM furniture pieces from IKEA, which feature light wood surfaces with a rather smooth lacquer finish. Unfortunately, even after relatively short use, small scratches keep appearing on the shelves and fronts—despite careful handling.
My question is: How can I better protect MALM furniture from scratches?
By protection, I mean anything that provides lasting results, whether it’s films, special protective coatings, maintenance products, or other methods. I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences and tips specifically on surface protection for MALM furniture, including advice on what really works in the long term and what are just nice extras that don’t help much.

Thank you for the great advice so far!
I understand that mechanical barriers, such as films or glass, make the most sense.
Does anyone know of specific products or manufacturers in German-speaking countries that are recommended for Malm furniture?
I’m also interested in whether there are films that remain truly invisible, without making the surface look matte or dull. That would be ideal.
Also: How do you handle cleaning of such protected furniture surfaces? Is there anything to keep in mind to avoid damaging the protective layer?

Regarding films, I recommend products like "d-c-fix Transparent" or "clear furniture film." They are readily available as furniture films, affordable, and offer surface durability that protects well against normal scratches.

Films that remain truly invisible, without making the surface look matte or dull Clear films are almost invisible but can sometimes reflect light slightly. Matte films change the appearance more noticeably.
For cleaning: Use only mild cleaners and a soft cloth. Harsh chemicals can damage the film. Abrasive cleaners should also be avoided.

If you use these self-adhesive transparent protective films that are actually intended for floors Cool idea! 🙂
I actually tried something like that, but for the desk. It’s important to apply the film very carefully without any air bubbles – otherwise, it quickly looks messy.
Also, a tip: Films from the automotive parts section are often very durable and self-healing. That might be worth considering if it needs to withstand a bit more wear and tear.
In addition: Some DIY skills definitely help, but it’s also doable alone with a bit of patience.
