I have a question that has been on my mind for a while and hope to get some shared experiences here in the forum: Are there any specific care products recommended for the surfaces of the Ikea Brimnes furniture series?

I am mainly interested in which cleaning and maintenance products best protect the surfaces without damaging or harming them.

Since BRIMNES often consists of coated particleboard with a matte or slightly textured surface, I want to avoid aggressive cleaning agents or unsuitable substances that might bleach, scratch, or cause stickiness on the surfaces.

Does anyone know of particular products or general helpful advice for caring for these furniture pieces to maintain their durability and appearance?

Thanks in advance for any tips and recommendations!

Basically, Ikea does not offer any special cleaning products exclusively designed for BRIMNES surfaces.

This is common for many furniture items made of coated panels because the surface is quite durable against regular household cleaners, as long as they are not abrasive or harsh.

- Therefore, avoid cleaners containing alcohol, ammonia, or strong solvents.
- Instead, use mild soapy water or all-purpose cleaners that are suitable for painted or lightly coated surfaces.
- It is important to wipe surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and dry them quickly to prevent water spots.

This way, the surface is preserved and no damage or discoloration occurs.

This is an important point, but I wonder if there are also special third-party products that might be better suited for such furniture surfaces. Many manufacturers now offer dedicated care products for coated furniture that are gentler and may even provide an additional protective layer.

I agree with that, but it would be interesting to know if these general recommendations are enough when furniture is more heavily soiled—such as with grease or stubborn stains. In such cases, a standard all-purpose cleaner might not be sufficient.

My recommendation: if you particularly value durability and very gentle cleaning, you should look into care products that are specifically marketed for melamine-coated or laminate furniture. Perhaps someone here already has experience with this?

I agree with that – the BRIMNES surfaces are sturdy, but you definitely don’t want to scrub the furniture with any cleanser that could ruin the nice matte finish or even damage the subtle texture.

For example, I use a mild furniture care wax for our BRIMNES dressers, which is specially formulated for coated surfaces. It doesn’t create a heavy shine, but the surface feels well cared for and gains a slight protective layer.

Of course, this is not absolutely necessary, but if you want to keep the furniture looking like new for a long time, such care can be quite useful. And: soft cloths are essential—rough sponges tend to cause scratches instead.

So: a special care product from a furniture or household store, or even a mild furniture oil for coated surfaces, is definitely worth considering.
