Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the problem of wanting to assemble my new BILLY bookcase, but unfortunately, I no longer have the instructions. The packaging was incomplete, so now I have to put the bookcase together completely without a manual.
My question is: What is the best way to assemble the BILLY bookcase without the official assembly instructions?
Are there any tips, tricks, or perhaps even alternative instructions online that can help me assemble the bookcase safely and securely?
I have some experience with furniture assembly, but since the BILLY consists of many individual parts, putting it together without instructions feels quite like a puzzle.
I would really appreciate any advice on how to proceed effectively, which parts typically go where, and which common pitfalls to avoid.
Thanks in advance!

Are there any tips, tricks, or maybe even alternative instructions online that can help me assemble the shelf safely and securely?Hello Siken! I completely understand how frustrating it can be without instructions. I had a similar experience with another piece of furniture – it really helps to carefully examine the shelf beforehand, sort out each part, and then visualize how they fit together.
I was lucky back then: there are actually several videos on YouTube and PDF instructions on IKEA websites or in forums that show older versions of the BILLY shelf. Maybe those could help you?
Otherwise, take your time and pay close attention to the drill holes; the position of the dowels is usually a good guide. Don’t worry, the shelves are sturdy if you assemble the main supports and connections properly.
Good luck – you can definitely do this! 🙂

Different BILLY models do have slight differences in connections and dimensions. Without exact knowledge of your specific version, this might cause confusion.
My advice: If no original manual is available, first try to identify the function of the parts based on their shape. For example, side panels, back panels, shelves, back braces, etc. Then you can assemble the unit in logical steps: connecting the side panels with the shelves, attaching the back panel, and so on. You should also always check that everything is square and placed on a level surface.
Only this way will the final piece be stable and not a wobbly construction.

I purchased a BILLY shelf with the dimensions 80x28x202 cm (31½x11x79½ inches). I will make sure to double-check exactly which model I have beforehand, so the information really fits.

If anyone has tips on handling the back panels (how to fasten them precisely for stability) or advice on which screws to insert first, I would also be very grateful.
Regarding the assembly of a BILLY bookshelf without instructions, there are some key facts that can be helpful:
1. The basic structure consists of two side panels, a top and bottom shelf, and the back panel (usually particleboard or hardboard).
2. The side panels typically have pre-drilled holes arranged in rows. These are used to insert dowels and screws for the shelves and also the adjustable shelves.
3. The back panel is usually fixed with small nails or thin screws, which increases stability and prevents twisting. Make sure the back panel sits flush.
4. Types of screws: For the side panels and shelves, dowels and wood screws are generally used. First, insert the dowels and secure the side panels before attaching the back panel.
5. It’s recommended to loosely assemble the parts first and check for right angles before tightening all screws.
6. IKEA often provides online versions of assembly instructions as PDFs under their help or support sections, searchable by model number.
A systematic approach significantly reduces errors and ensures stability.

If anyone has tips on handling the back panels (how to fix them precisely to ensure they stay stable)It’s great that you’re sharing such helpful tips here!! 🙂
I assembled my BILLY without instructions, and here’s my experience: press the back panels firmly, then drive in a few nails at an angle – that provides excellent stability!
Don’t rush, just take it step by step. I even listened to music while assembling, which made the process more enjoyable 🙂
Another recommendation: sort all parts in one place beforehand to avoid a lot of searching.
Good luck, you’ll manage it!! :-)
