Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase that I want to customize and repair. I noticed that there can be significant differences in the availability of replacement parts. My question to the community is: In your experience, which replacement parts for the Billy bookcase are the hardest to get when you want to replace individual shelves, back panels, connector fittings, or other specific components?

I am especially interested to know if you are aware of certain parts that can only be obtained directly from Ikea or are even considered discontinued, and whether there are alternative sources to get them.

Thanks for your insights!

Basically, with BILLY, the shelves and back panels are often the most difficult parts to obtain.

This especially applies to back panels, as they are often only sold as part of a complete unit. Ordering individual back panels is not always possible, particularly for older models.

As an alternative, I recommend checking local classifieds or furniture marketplaces, where used but well-preserved individual parts are frequently offered.

Floors can sometimes be purchased through Ikea, but not all models are currently in stock.
Back panels are often only available in sets of three, which can be unnecessarily expensive.

Hello reteteo,

I can understand your question well. In addition to the mentioned issues with the shelves and back panels, it should also be noted that some connecting fittings or screws are specifically designed for BILLY and are often not available in typical hardware stores.

Often, you can still inquire through Ikea customer service whether individual small parts are sold separately. In some cases, retailers also offer suitable alternatives through platforms like Amazon or eBay.

If you can describe the shelf in more detail, I may be able to assist you more specifically.

Thank you for the responses so far!

I am using the classic BILLY bookcase, 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide, with four shelves and a back panel. The model is about 6 years old. I specifically need the third shelf from the bottom for repair, as it shows significant wear.

That will probably be the main issue. So the other parts would have to hold up until I possibly replace the entire unit?

Are there suitable replacement materials available for blanks like back panels that can be cut to size individually? Or is this generally not recommended because BILLY uses specific dimensions?

The dimensions of the BILLY shelf are standardized, but the material and thickness of the back panels vary depending on the model and production year.

Yes, it is generally possible to purchase plywood or MDF boards at hardware stores and cut them to size. It is important to consider the thickness of the material to ensure the shelf remains stable.

Note: The original back panel is often thin (approximately 3 mm (0.12 inches)), and alternative boards may be thicker, which can complicate or require modification of screw or nail strip installation.
