Hello everyone,
I own several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, which I really appreciate, especially for their sturdy construction and timeless design. Now, I want to make sure I clean these pieces in a sustainable and eco-friendly way to protect the materials and avoid unnecessary chemicals.
I’m interested in what products and methods you use to clean the Hemnes series effectively and sustainably.
Specifically, I’m looking for advice on the following points:
- Which biodegradable or natural cleaning products do you recommend?
- Are there any special precautions when cleaning Hemnes furniture to avoid damaging the surface (usually lacquered or oiled solid wood)?
- How often should the furniture be cleaned to maintain it well without harming the environment?
I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

I completely understand your question, as I regularly clean Hemnes furniture myself and prioritize sustainability. Basically, Hemnes furniture is made of lacquered or oiled pine wood, which limits the choice of cleaning products because overly aggressive substances can damage the protective coating.
This is how I proceed:
- First, I use warm water with a small amount of biodegradable dish soap (preferably one without fragrances or dyes).
- I clean the furniture surface with a soft microfiber cloth to avoid scratches.
- For heavier stains, I mix a solution of vinegar and water in a 1:10 ratio – please be cautious and always test on an inconspicuous area first, as vinegar can cause discoloration on oiled surfaces.
- After cleaning, I wipe the furniture with clean water and dry it thoroughly to prevent moisture damage.
For maintenance, every few months I apply a natural wood oil, such as linseed oil, sparingly – this renews the protective layer and keeps the furniture in good condition.
Since you are asking about sustainability: definitely avoid synthetic cleaners containing solvents or harsh chemicals. These can unnecessarily harm the environment and damage the wood.
How often to clean? Depending on use, a light cleaning every few weeks is usually sufficient, with more frequent cleaning if needed. Over-cleaning can unnecessarily wear down the surface.
What is your current routine? Do you already use specific products or have problem areas with your furniture?

This contradicts the sustainability concept because you might need to re-oil more often or even repair damaged spots later.
Perhaps it is better to avoid such substances altogether if you want to think sustainably?
Furthermore, the cleaning method is much more important than the cleaning agent – that is, the mechanical handling, the gentleness when wiping, and quick drying. Sustainability also means durability of the furniture.
Hey everyone!
I love my Hemnes dresser and have found a way to make cleaning a bit more enjoyable 😄. For example, I simply mix water with some lemon juice, which smells fresh and natural. Then I just wipe it down with a soft cloth – done!
It’s important to immediately go over the surface again afterward to avoid leaving the wood too wet.
A little story: Once I completely forgot to do the second wipe, and voilà – a small water ring appeared! Since then, I’ve been a bit more careful. 😉
Something else that helps a lot: opening the windows for some fresh air adds sustainability to the process – everything dries faster and the moisture doesn’t soak into the wood.

By the way, I use a mix of olive oil and lemon juice as a natural treatment for the wood surface, very sustainable and nourishing! Especially for solid wood, it’s a real benefit. Give it a try; it smells wonderful too!
Keep it up, your furniture will thank you!
