Hello everyone,
I own several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, which I really appreciate, especially for their sturdy construction and timeless design. Now, I want to make sure I clean these pieces in a sustainable and eco-friendly way to protect the materials and avoid unnecessary chemicals.
I’m interested in what products and methods you use to clean the Hemnes series effectively and sustainably.
Specifically, I’m looking for advice on the following points:
- Which biodegradable or natural cleaning products do you recommend?
- Are there any special precautions when cleaning Hemnes furniture to avoid damaging the surface (usually lacquered or oiled solid wood)?
- How often should the furniture be cleaned to maintain it well without harming the environment?
I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Maybe it’s best to avoid such products altogether if you want to think sustainably?Thank you for the critical perspective. That’s true—any type of acid could be problematic.
For that reason, I tend to prefer cleaners that are as neutral as possible.

By the way, I use a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice as a natural treatment for the wood surfaceHow exactly do you apply this mixture? Directly on the wood or diluted? And how often?
I’m really looking forward to more tips regarding the proper care intervals for Hemnes furniture.

I therefore tend to prefer as neutral cleaners as possible.Exactly, that’s the right approach. Additionally, I would like to mention that I am somewhat cautious about using olive oil as a care oil because it can become rancid, which may cause unpleasant odors and a sticky surface.
Pure linseed oil or care oils specifically designed for wood without additives have proven to work better.
Regarding application:
- Apply the oil thinly and sparingly
- Let it absorb for a few minutes
- Wipe off any excess oil with a dry cloth
As for cleaning frequency, I recommend light cleaning with mild dish soap or water every 3-4 weeks, while intensive care with oil should be done only quarterly to semi-annually, depending on use.
Do your Hemnes furniture pieces have special finishes (painted or oiled)? That could influence the cleaning method.
