Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue for some time now with the drawers of my Ikea Besta cabinets not sliding properly. Specifically, they either catch, feel stiff, or sometimes only move with a strong pull when opening and closing. The drawer slides themselves look undamaged from the outside, but I suspect that the rollers might be worn out or that dirt has accumulated. Does anyone know this problem or have experience with what the best approach is in such a case? I would like to know whether a repair is worthwhile, if it makes sense to get replacement parts, or if the entire mechanism might need to be replaced. Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!
For Ikea Besta drawers, the metal slides are often the cause if they no longer operate smoothly. First, you should completely remove the rails to clean them thoroughly. Dust or small debris often accumulates, hindering the sliding motion. If the rollers or running components are damaged, Ikea offers replacement parts that allow you to repair the sliding mechanism without replacing the entire drawer. Also, make sure the drawer is correctly aligned and properly installed, as misalignment can also cause sticking or difficult operation.
Hello, I can understand this well, as this sometimes happens with Ikea drawer slides after extended use. It is important to inspect the tracks carefully and look for any stuck debris or deposits. If small particles are lodged inside, you can gently remove them with a fine brush or a lint-free cloth. After that, a special lubricant for metal glides, such as a dry PTFE spray, usually helps. I would avoid liquid oils, as they tend to attract dirt. If the rollers appear worn, replacement parts are available that you can quite easily change yourself – Ikea offers these components as accessories. If you need help with removing the slides, feel free to get in touch!

Generally, Besta drawer slides from Ikea are equipped with ball bearings that require relatively little maintenance. If the drawer front has warped or the carcass of the cabinet is no longer perfectly square, this can additionally obstruct the movement. It is recommended to completely remove the drawer before cleaning and to check for flatness. Alternatively, the slides can be repurchased, as Ikea offers them as spare parts. As a supplement, cleaning and lubricating the sliding mechanisms once a year extends their service life.
That’s exactly how I know it too! At first, things get stuck and it’s really annoying, but once you find the right lubricant, everything works much more smoothly. I’ve been using a silicone spray for a while now, and it works great for me. Give it a try – it’s inexpensive and really improves your drawers! 🙂
