Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of securely mounting my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to an existing concrete wall. The wall is smooth and apparently quite solid, which makes attaching the cabinets somewhat challenging.

I am especially interested in which fasteners you would recommend to ensure a stable and long-lasting installation—particularly considering the load from heavy kitchen cabinets.

Are there specific types of anchors or screws that have proven to be especially reliable? What are the best drilling methods for concrete, and how can I avoid problems like anchors slipping out or the wall cracking?

It would also be helpful to know whether it makes sense to build a subframe from wood or metal in front of the concrete wall to attach the cabinets to, or if direct anchoring is better.

Looking forward to advice and experiences, thanks in advance!

The safest option is to use special concrete anchors, such as metal ones. Use a drill with an SDS drill bit of the appropriate size.

Direct fastening with long screws and anchors in concrete is stable enough; usually, you don’t need a substructure. Important: Measure carefully and fully insert the anchors.

Regarding the attachment of IKEA Metod kitchen units to concrete walls, I recommend a structured approach.

- First, carefully check the exact condition of the wall to determine if it is solid concrete or if there are any cavities within the concrete.
- Always use a high-quality SDS-Plus drill bit for drilling, matching the diameter of the anchors.
- For anchors, heavy-duty anchors or metal expansion anchors (e.g., Fischer FUR 10 or similar) are recommended, as they secure well in concrete and can carry high loads.

It is also important to calculate the load: the upper wall cabinets not only have to support their own weight but also additional forces, for example, from opened doors.

Using a wooden substructure is only advisable if the wall is uneven or severely damaged; otherwise, the more direct the attachment to the concrete, the more durable and load-bearing it will be.

Pre-drilling in multiple spots to distribute the loads is also helpful. Avoid using plastic anchors alone, as they usually do not provide sufficient hold. Do you have access to a drill with a hammer function? That makes drilling much easier.

I can only confirm that—I did exactly the same after having doubts about whether the concrete would really hold. At first, I was unsure because of the heavy cabinets, but with the right metal expansion anchors, it holds firmly.

I had also considered screwing on a wooden batten beforehand, but with my smooth concrete, that was actually unnecessary and would have delayed the installation.

Sure, drilling into concrete is hard work and a bit noisy, but it’s worth it for the stability. I totally understand that it can be intimidating at first, but with the right tools, you can manage it!

In addition to the excellent input so far, here is a short tutorial for installing IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on concrete walls:

1. Preparation:
- Check the wall: solid concrete or a substructure?
- Choose the right anchors: for concrete, metal expansion or heavy-duty anchors work best.

2. Tools:
- Hammer drill or rotary hammer with SDS-Plus drill bit matching the anchor diameter.
- Spirit level and pencil for precise markings.

3. Drilling:
- Rub the drill bit with a little oil or graphite beforehand to reduce friction.
- Drill at least as deep as the anchor length plus 10–15mm (0.4–0.6 inches) extra.
- Clean out the hole thoroughly—dust reduces holding strength.

4. Inserting anchors:
- Press anchors fully and firmly into the hole.
- For metal expansion anchors, ensure they expand properly inside the hole.

5. Screws and installation:
- Use heavy-duty screws that are long enough.
- Hang cabinets carefully, preferably with two people.

Common mistakes:
- Using only plastic anchors, which can fail under load.
- Not cleaning drilled holes, resulting in poor grip.
- Choosing anchor size that is too small.

Summary: Attach directly to the concrete wall using quality metal anchors, drill deeply enough, and ensure holes are clean for maximum safety.
