ᐅ According to the instructions, my shelf is supposed to be a Kallax, but the dimensions don’t match. Would filing a complaint help?

lynnmarHello everyone,
I recently bought a shelving unit that is clearly labeled as a Kallax in the instructions. However, the dimensions do not match the official Kallax measurements I found online. The unit seems slightly narrower, and the height differs a bit as well.
My question is: Is it worth contacting the seller or IKEA to file a complaint because the product doesn’t meet the specifications? Or are such variations normal for furniture, so I should just keep the unit as it is?
I actually want to continue using the shelf, but if there is an error or the wrong product was delivered, I would like to know. Has anyone had experience with similar cases? How accurate are the dimensions usually for Kallax units, and how reliable is the labeling in the instructions?
Thanks in advance!

Hello lynnmar,
I’d like to help you better understand the issue.
First of all: IKEA Kallax shelves have very standardized dimensions, for example 77x77 cm (width x height, depth approx. 39 cm (15 inches)) for the 4-compartment model. You can easily check these values on the IKEA website or in their catalogs. Significant deviations beyond a few millimeters are usually unusual.
If your shelf is supposed to be a Kallax following the instructions, but the dimensions systematically differ considerably, then either:
1. A wrong product or variation was delivered (e.g., a replica or a similar model, but not an official IKEA product).
2. There is a manufacturing defect, which is quite rare at IKEA due to their quality controls.
My recommendation:
- Measure the dimensions precisely with a tape measure at several points and note them down.
- Compare these with the official IKEA data.
- If there is a measurable difference of more than about 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches), I would contact customer service.
- For a complaint, take photos of the instructions and your shelf (for your own records) to clearly document the case.
Sometimes there are regionally different productions, but these are usually communicated by IKEA.
Summary:
Filing a complaint may be worthwhile if the dimensions differ significantly. Even if you want to use the shelf, you should make sure that you actually received the model you ordered.
Hope this helps!

Dimensions do not match the official Kallax sizes, the shelf appears narrowerThere could be several reasons for this:
- Wrong product or an older series (e.g., previously the Expedit was used, which differs slightly)
- Manufacturing variance within allowable tolerances
- Possible assembly issue (for example, if the shelf is not assembled perfectly square, it can look different)
If you purchased the furniture directly from IKEA, you generally have the right to file a complaint for visible deviations or defects. It is important to have the order number and proof of purchase ready.
If you got the shelf from another supplier, it is worth carefully reviewing the product description first.
In any case, there is nothing wrong with contacting customer service to clarify the situation. You should have exact measurements and photos (for the supplier’s internal use) ready to demonstrate the discrepancy.
Conclusion: Yes, filing a complaint can be useful to get clarification. IKEA is usually cooperative if the products do not match their standard dimensions.

Is it worth making a complaint with the retailer or IKEA because the product does not match the specifications?Yes, definitely! :-) It’s really important to get clarity on this! If the dimensions don’t match, it’s not just frustrating—it can also limit the usability or affect the overall appearance.
I once made a complaint about a piece of furniture that looked great on the packaging, but the measurements were wrong. IKEA helped me without any issues, and I was able to get a replacement product.
So: go ahead and make the complaint—you’ll see they will sort it out for you! It’s worth it because you’ll end up with a piece of furniture that exactly matches what you ordered, leaving no uncertainties.
Good luck! 🙂
