Hello everyone,
I have several MALM furniture pieces from IKEA, especially dressers and nightstands, and I would like to use them more efficiently in my apartment.
Since the design is quite simple, I am wondering if there are practical and creative ways to better organize storage or make the furniture more multifunctional.
I am particularly interested in how to optimally organize the drawers and maybe customize the furniture individually without having to do extensive modifications myself.
Does anyone have practical tips or tried-and-tested solutions for making better everyday use of MALM furniture? Thanks in advance!

The best fit for organizing is drawer dividers.
Additionally, suitable storage boxes from the IKEA range are helpful.
If you want the furniture to be more multifunctional, you can also use MALM dressers as TV stands.

I share the experience that a well-organized interior layout of drawers is crucial.
My advice:
1. Customize or make your own drawer inserts (e.g., with wooden slats or dividers).
2. Create compartments suited to the contents (clothing, office supplies, cosmetics).
3. Also use the surface of the dresser: a tray or organizer for frequently used items adds extra convenience.
4. In general, avoid overfilling, as it reduces clarity and accessibility.

I converted my MALM dresser into a small workspace by placing a desktop on top.
The drawers are used for files and office supplies.
Multifunctional and space-saving.

It is important that the measurements are precise when purchasing drawer inserts or organizers.
I also recommend reinforcing the back panel of MALM dressers occasionally if they are heavily loaded, for example with an additional TV or heavy decorations.
This way, you can use the furniture as a sideboard in the living room without any stability issues.

Thanks for the tips so far!
@zarHenning: "Dividers fit best in the drawers" – do you have any recommendations on where I can get custom dividers for free or at low cost? Also, I’d like more details on your idea of using MALM as a TV stand. Does that work with all models?
@SauDietmar: How do you build dividers yourself using wooden slats? What dimensions work best, and how do you secure the slats?
I want to do as much as possible myself but also don’t want to damage any furniture.
