Hello everyone, I am using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as an improvised dog crate for my medium-sized dog. The unit has a fixed back panel and is closed on two sides. Now I am wondering how to best clean the inside of the KALLAX without damaging the surfaces or compromising its stability. My dog sometimes has increased saliva flow and occasional urination, and I would also like to remove hardened dirt residues. Does anyone have experience with which cleaning agents and methods keep the inside of the KALLAX clean and hygienic over the long term? I want to avoid risks from harsh cleaners but still clean thoroughly. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

I recommend completely emptying the box and wiping it down with a vinegar-water solution if there is significant dirt, as it is natural and neutralizes odors. After that, dry it thoroughly. I do not think aggressive cleaning agents are necessary, as the material is sensitive.

Here is a guide with safety instructions:
1. Remove hair and coarse dirt before cleaning.
2. A hand mop or microfiber cloth with warm water and a small amount of mild detergent has proven effective.
3. For stubborn stains, strongly diluted vinegar essence can help—test first on an inconspicuous area to avoid discoloration.
4. Never use bleach-based or abrasive cleaners, as they can severely damage and make the surface porous.
5. After cleaning, allow to dry thoroughly, preferably using a hairdryer on the cool setting to prevent moisture from lingering.
6. For the next cleaning, a protective film or mat on the bottom of the box can be used, which can be removed and cleaned to protect the shelf.

The cleaning instructions are correct. Additionally, I would like to point out that the back panel of the KALLAX needs special protection, as moisture often penetrates there and can cause swelling. I recommend regularly checking the interior walls for minor moisture damage and, if necessary, treating them with waterproof varnish. This significantly extends the lifespan of the shelf.

Exactly, address repairs early. Otherwise, stability and hygiene can be seriously compromised.
