Hello everyone, I recently bought several Ikea Brimnes furniture pieces, including a bed frame and shelves, and despite careful assembly, some of them show a certain instability, especially under load or when sitting or leaning on them. I am very interested in how to stabilize Ikea BRIMNES furniture without changing the appearance or investing too much effort. Are there any recommended methods or tips to permanently improve the stability of BRIMNES furniture? It is particularly important for me to achieve this without complicated modifications or expensive additional parts. I would be very grateful for any advice or shared experiences!
The topic of stabilizing BRIMNES furniture should be considered in detail, as it involves different components and materials. Generally, I recommend the following approach: First, check all connection points for secure fit and proper tightening of screws, as the main issue often results partly from insufficient pre-tension. To increase stability, you can use additional cross braces or brackets, ideally made of metal, and install them discreetly on the inside. This significantly reduces shear stress on the joints. For bed frames, it is advisable to check whether the slatted bed bases rest firmly and do not wobble; if necessary, add extra wooden slats to better distribute the load. Note that for BRIMNES, the type of screws and dowels used also affects stability—original replacement parts are recommended here. I would also like to know which piece of furniture is particularly unstable for you, so I can provide more targeted advice.

Specifically, the instability mainly concerns the BRIMNES bed frame measuring 160 x 200 cm (63 x 79 inches). The bed feels unstable in certain areas, especially when I sit down on the side. The shelves also seem slightly wobbly when fully loaded, particularly the tall, large model. I have already checked and tightened all the screws without much difference. I am looking for advice on how to stabilize the bed and shelves more effectively with minimal effort, without having to completely disassemble the furniture.
Hello Lucapin, I understand well how uncomfortable this instability can be, especially with large furniture like the BRIMNES bed. My recommendation is to reinforce the bed by attaching small metal brackets underneath the frame, ideally at the corners. This increases stability, particularly with lateral loads. For the shelves, it sometimes helps to add additional sturdy crossbars on the back panel or to better secure the back panel with stronger screws or metal straps. If the walls allow, you can also fix the shelves to the wall, which reduces wobbling. You don’t need to disassemble the entire piece of furniture – small adjustments at already accessible points are often sufficient.

Sometimes it helps to add extra sturdy horizontal battens specifically to the back panel or to better secure the back panel with stronger screws or metal straps for the shelves. That’s a good point. I would also recommend not relying solely on the original thin back panels for stabilization in BRIMNES units. Excessive loading can compromise stability. If there is enough space, attaching a thin plywood sheet on the inside, secured with brackets, can prevent lateral tilting. This often makes a crucial difference.
