How can Ikea Hemnes furniture be made child-friendly?
I have several Hemnes furniture pieces from Ikea at home, including dressers, shelves, and nightstands. Since I have young children, I want to optimize the furniture to ensure it is safe and can withstand play without getting damaged easily.
I am not only thinking about safety, such as rounded edges or securing against tipping, but also about protection against scratches, stains, and overall durability with frequent use by children.
Does anyone have experience or specific tips on how to make Hemnes furniture easily and effectively child-friendly? For example, through special protective elements, surface treatments, or additional fittings? I am also interested in advice on securing the furniture or designing it in an age-appropriate way.

First of all, it is important to secure the furniture against tipping, as Hemnes dressers and shelves are quite tall and heavy. Ikea provides anti-tip kits, which should definitely be installed.
Furthermore, I recommend rounding off the edges with special plastic edge protectors. These are available at hardware stores and help prevent injuries from bumps.
For surface protection, clear, matte protective films that are waterproof and easy to clean work well. Alternatively, removable furniture covers or decorative films are useful, as they do not stick permanently to the surface.
If repainting is planned: a sealing, low-emission furniture polish or a special child-safe varnish increases durability but should be formally certified.
Finally, it is advisable to replace handles with softer versions to reduce the risk of injury and protect little fingers.

Great topic! I have exactly the same furniture and can definitely recommend securing the dressers with the included screws – it provides extra safety, and I feel more at ease when the little ones are playing. 😊
We also used edge protectors from a child safety kit; they are really practical and don’t affect the appearance much.
And very important: I use self-adhesive felt furniture pads on the undersides of the drawers – they cushion movement and protect the drawer surfaces at the same time. Give it a try, it’s really worth it!

Does anyone have experience or concrete tips on how to make Hemnes furniture easily and effectively child-friendly? For example, through special protective elements, surface treatments, or additional accessories? In addition to the suggestions already made, I recommend applying an extra sealant to the surface, such as a non-toxic acrylic varnish. This increases protection against moisture and stains.
It is also important to avoid loose small parts—handles should be checked regularly since screws can loosen with heavy use.
For the design itself, it is useful to use storage options like fabric boxes and baskets that fit into the Hemnes shelves, helping to organize items. They prevent toys and small items from piling up on surfaces, reducing wear.
Another tip is regular maintenance of the furniture, especially hinges and drawer runners, to ensure proper function despite frequent use.

I have Hemnes furniture myself and find that with a few small decorative touches like colorful doors or magnetic chalkboard sheets, you can make the furniture not only safer but also truly child-friendly and fun.
What also works well are small cushions or soft covers on the seats of chairs and stools that can be removed and washed.
This way, sturdy furniture becomes a bit more “kid-friendly” with a fun factor – and it also helps protect against wear and tear! 😉
