RubyleoHello everyone, after recently moving, I unpacked our IKEA Malm furniture and noticed that some areas are worn and look a bit unattractive. Due to the move, there are not only small scratches but also slightly dusty surfaces and some misaligned drawers.
My goal is to refresh the furniture so that it looks almost like new again, without having to completely redo the surface or repaint it. So, it’s more about gentle restoration: cleaning, minor repairs, and, if needed, surface care.
Does anyone have experience with the best way to approach this? Which products or tools are suitable? And how can misaligned drawers be properly adjusted? I look forward to your tips and advice, thank you!

Hello Rubyleo,
When restoring Malm furniture, I recommend starting with a thorough but gentle cleaning. Use a mild all-purpose cleaner or furniture cleaner applied with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive agents, as the surface of Malm furniture is usually a laminate that can be easily damaged.
For scratches, special furniture repair markers matched to the color can be helpful. Misaligned drawers can often be fixed by adjusting the drawer slides – IKEA also provides instructions for this.
A final treatment with furniture wax or oil can protect the surface but should be applied sparingly.
If you need more detailed assistance, I’d be happy to provide further information.

Just wipe it down with a leather care cloth if you have one—that can already give a little refresh! 🙂
And with a bit of patience, you can get the drawers sliding smoothly again. That small effort is definitely worth it. Good luck!
Hello Rubyleo,
I agree with the previous advice and would like to emphasize that the material must be taken into account when cleaning Malm furniture. Most of the surfaces are melamine-coated, so aggressive cleaners or excessive water should be avoided to prevent swelling or blistering.
For misaligned drawers, loosening and readjusting the rails often helps; these are usually supplied with the furniture or described online.
Using sandpaper on wood-like edges or wood filler for small solid wood furniture may also be appropriate if you have the wooden version.
I recommend thoroughly drying the surface with a microfiber cloth after cleaning before applying any care products. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

Hey,
definitely don’t get discouraged! It’s great when you can restore furniture to its shine after moving! 🙂
For my Malm dresser, I started simply with a damp cloth and a bit of dish soap. Then I repaired small wood filler cracks using colored repair wax. I lubricated the drawers with graphite powder – now they slide perfectly! This method really works well and is great for the furniture!
Have fun with your project!
