Hello everyone, I’m currently considering buying a Billy bookcase from IKEA and I’m wondering: Is it generally better to assemble the Billy bookcase following the instruction manual, or can you also put it together without the manual, for example by organizing the steps yourself and assembling the parts intuitively? I’m particularly interested in the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, especially regarding potential errors, time required, and the stability of the bookcase. Has anyone had experience with this and can say whether it’s possible to skip the instructions if you are handy, or if the manual actually provides a significant benefit? I look forward to your feedback!

Basically, the IKEA manual ensures that assembly proceeds in a structured and mostly error-free manner. This is especially helpful for shelving systems like Billy, which have many drill holes and connection points. While it is possible to assemble without the manual — for example, by scanning the parts beforehand and having a clear idea of the furniture piece — mistakes cannot be ruled out, especially if parts are screwed together in the wrong order. This often leads to having to disassemble or damage parts. Additionally, the manual saves time, even if you don’t follow it step by step — it provides a clear and logical sequence.

My advice: if you plan to use the shelf frequently or assemble multiple units, you should not ignore the manual. For single shelves and experienced DIYers, independent assembly can also work well, provided there is careful planning.

Hello, I can only agree with Anken and would like to add something, especially for those who may have assembled IKEA furniture several times.

The instruction manual ensures that all screws and dowels are placed in the correct locations. If you skip it, you often risk the stability because you might overlook important fixing points.

Additionally, the instructions often include tips on how to properly level the shelving unit, for example, whether the back panel should be doweled or how the shelves should be inserted to keep the unit stable. I have had cases where I later realized that missing screws made it unsafe to use the shelving unit in the long term.

My advice: Even if you think you can assemble it intuitively, it is worth reading through the entire instruction manual at least once. It saves frustration and prevents small mistakes that can cause problems later. 🙂

What I like about this discussion is that it offers different perspectives. I used to be the type of person who assembled furniture without instructions – thinking I knew the process well enough and that would be sufficient.

The instructions ... provide a clear sequence that makes sense.

That turned out to be true, because I had to disassemble some pieces later on since I had started in the wrong place or missed important connectors. That was frustrating and time-consuming. On the other hand, I once saw someone who managed very well without instructions, but they had a lot of experience and gave me some helpful tips.

I would recommend at least trying to follow the sequence as closely as possible and refer to the instructions, especially if you’re not very experienced. Otherwise, it can get stressful quickly.

Here is a summary: Instructions = safety and less time loss. It can work without instructions, but the risk of mistakes increases. Use the instructions to save time and hassle.
