Hello everyone, I have a small problem and hope to get some helpful advice here: my BILLY shelves from IKEA are actually very practical, but the doors close quite loudly, which is especially annoying in the evening. I suspect this is due to the hinges or possibly the door stop, but how can I effectively reduce the noise? What methods or materials really help to make the BILLY doors quieter? Are there any proven tricks, such as seals or special rubber buffers, that can be attached without affecting the appearance or function? I would appreciate concrete suggestions that are easy to apply in everyday life and don’t require much effort. Thanks in advance!

Hi, try retrofitting hinges with soft-close functionality; they effectively dampen the door slamming. Alternatively, you can install small rubber bumpers on the inside of the door to prevent a hard impact. Both options are quick to install and readily available.

There are several effective ways to reduce the noise of BILLY doors. First: Replace the existing hinges with so-called "soft-close" hinges, which allow for dampened closing and reduce drafts. This is not only practical but also extends the doors’ lifespan. Second: Attach self-adhesive damping pads or felt strips at the contact points on the frame. These are discreet, inexpensive, and prevent hard slamming. It is important that the doors are properly adjusted so they do not stick or close crookedly, which can also increase the locking noise. Tip: Especially check the hinge adjustment with a screwdriver to ensure the doors close evenly and smoothly.

Your BILLY doors make a little "pop concert" sound when closing – typical! 🙂

sums it up well; they really make the difference. If you don’t want to replace them, using felt or rubber bumpers also helps reduce the noise. One more tip: a drop of silicone oil on the hinges makes everything smoother and quieter, really easy! All in all, a small project that’s worth it, especially for your neighbors or your own peace and quiet 😉 Good luck!

This is amazing, so much has already been figured out here! :-)

I did that too, and it makes a real difference! Plus: the self-adhesive dampers I attached to the edges are great—you can really feel it when closing the doors: much more pleasant. For everyone who hasn’t tried it yet—go for it! It’s not difficult at all, it’s fun, and it greatly increases comfort. 🙂 Just want to encourage you to customize your BILLY doors a bit!
