Hello everyone,

I am planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen unit in my small apartment and want to maximize the available countertop space. My challenge is to use the room as efficiently as possible – the kitchen should be functional, but above all, provide enough space for food preparation without making the area feel cluttered.

My question is: How can IKEA Metod kitchen units be arranged to offer plenty of countertop space despite limited room size? Are there specific layouts or modules that work particularly well? Does anyone have tips on planning, countertop depth, or corner solutions to gain more surface area?

I have already read about the different cabinet sizes and configurations but am unsure how to combine them optimally. I’m also interested in how to integrate appliances so they don’t take up unnecessary space.

Any recommendations or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Hello Kali45,

Your concern is completely understandable, as the variety of cabinets and sizes in IKEA Metod can make planning a bit complex.

To maximize countertop space, the following points are important:
- Choose deep base cabinets (up to 63 cm (25 inches) instead of the standard 37 cm (15 inches) for wall cabinets) since they provide more space for countertops.
- Use corner solutions like the "Magic Corner" or drawer inserts to efficiently utilize otherwise lost corner space.
- Consider integrating built-in appliances (oven, microwave) into tall cabinets to keep the countertop area free.
- The areas between the stove, sink, and refrigerator should remain as clear as possible to create a welcoming work zone.

Additionally, with Metod it often makes sense to extend the countertop over multiple cabinets instead of having small, interrupted surfaces. This creates a pleasantly large and continuous workspace.

Do you already have specific room dimensions or measurements that we can take a look at?

I agree with this and would like to add:

- Pay attention to the choice of countertop materials. Dark, durable surfaces can visually add more depth.
- Combine open shelves or wall cabinets with a shallow depth to visually expand the space without blocking the countertop area.
- If possible, plan for a continuous countertop with an overhang to create additional space for placing items.
- When designing the kitchen layout, consider modular shelving systems like those from IKEA to build extra countertop or storage areas flexibly.

Depending on the size of your room, you can also work with a peninsula or a kitchen island, even in smaller spaces – this often creates extra, usable surface area.

To add, I would like to precisely highlight some important planning aspects:

- The standard depths for base cabinets in Metod are 60 cm (without countertop) and 63 cm (with countertop).
- The countertop typically has a thickness of 3.8 cm, which results in a usable depth from the front edge to the cabinet carcass of about 63 cm (25 inches).
- Corner cabinets with rotating inserts or pull-outs are essential to use storage space efficiently; it’s worth investing a bit more to ensure functionality.
- Countertops can be cut to size when purchased at IKEA; make sure to choose a countertop that is sufficiently deep, either laminated or solid, to guarantee durability.
- Consider replacing deep wall cabinets with open shelves if necessary, to avoid visually overwhelming the space.

Regarding appliances: Wall-mounted appliances free up countertop space, as no equipment needs to sit on the work surface.

It’s best to carry out the planning in advance using the IKEA kitchen planner and cross-check it with actual measurements.

Here is a brief guide on how to plan an IKEA Metod kitchen unit to maximize countertop workspace:

1. Measure the room and create a floor plan: Take exact measurements of the room and note special features such as windows, doors, and utility connections.
2. Plan using the IKEA kitchen planner: Choose cabinets that are as deep and wide as possible. 80cm (31½ inches) wide base cabinets provide more surface area.
3. Corner solutions: Use rotating carousels or pull-outs instead of standard corner cabinets – this increases storage space and accessibility.
4. Countertop:
- Use the widest and deepest countertops possible.
- Make sure the countertops do not overlap at points that visually or functionally disrupt the surface.
5. Appliance placement: Install appliances in tall or column cabinets to keep the countertop free.
6. Additional modules: Open shelves or wall-mounted boards can hold extra kitchen utensils without reducing workspace.

A common mistake I notice is choosing many small cabinets instead of fewer large ones. Smaller cabinets often break up the countertop and prevent a large continuous surface.

My advice: Work with as few but as large modules as possible and design the countertop as one long, uninterrupted surface.
