Hello everyone,

I recently started assembling Ikea Platsa shelves at home on carpeted floors. My challenge is that I want to secure the shelves very firmly because carpeted floors are naturally soft and flexible. Simply placing them on the carpet feels too unstable, especially with taller modular combinations.

I am interested in hearing which methods or materials you would recommend to fasten the shelves safely and permanently on carpet. For example, does using special anti-slip mats or additional base plates under the carpet work? Or should you avoid using anchors and screws to prevent damage to the carpet or the floor underneath?

Also, I’m curious how you address the issue of uneven carpet surfaces causing the shelves to wobble. Do you have practical tips for leveling out unevenness without compromising the shelf’s stability?

Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Thank you all!

Hello Fadoro,

I completely understand that stability on carpet is important to you. Carpet as a base does present some challenges that should be considered.

Generally, for Ikea PLATSA shelving units on carpet, I recommend the following:

- Non-slip mats: These come in various thicknesses and materials (rubber, foam). They prevent the shelving unit from sliding on the carpet.

- Floor boards or OSB boards: Placing a thin, sturdy wooden board under the shelf helps distribute the weight more evenly and ensures the entire frame stands on a level, solid surface. This is especially helpful if the carpet is very soft, as it reduces sinking.

- Be careful when attaching directly to the floor. Screws or anchors in the floor are usually not an option, as they can damage both the carpet and the subfloor.

- It is also important to mount the shelves to the wall, if possible. Ikea offers suitable wall anchors or brackets that provide much more stability.

- You might also consider using furniture pads or felt glides under the shelf feet to increase the contact area and prevent sinking.

Regarding unevenness: If the shelf wobbles, you can balance the load better by using suitable shims or small wooden inserts at foot level. Some users also mention self-adhesive leveling feet.

This might sound a bit complicated, but it significantly improves the stability of shelving units on carpet.

If you can provide more details about the carpet thickness or whether there is a tile or wood subfloor underneath, I can give you more specific advice.

This is an important point I’d like to add, as there are significant differences in quality and application when it comes to anti-slip mats. To ensure your Ikea PLATSA shelves stay securely in place on carpeted floors, you should consider the following details:

- Choose a mat with high friction, ideally made of natural rubber or silicone coating. Simple foam mats often provide insufficient grip and tend to shift over time.

- The thickness of the mat should be between 3-5mm (0.1-0.2 inches) to adequately compensate for the carpet’s unevenness while still providing a stable base.

- If the carpet is very deep-pile or soft, it’s worth placing a sturdy wooden or MDF board underneath the anti-slip mat. This prevents the shelf’s feet from sinking into the carpet, which would otherwise cause long-term instability.

- Wall anchoring the shelf is strongly recommended—you can find special brackets and anchor straps at Ikea that are easy to install. This is especially important for shelves standing on carpet, as tipping is much more likely without wall fixation.

- For height adjustment on uneven spots, you can use plastic furniture wedges. These fit under the feet and are adjustable in depth, allowing you to level the shelf precisely.

A quick question: How thick is your carpet? And what type of subfloor do you have underneath—wood, screed, or concrete? This influences the choice of anchoring method.

If you like, I can also prepare a brief guide on how to assemble the wooden board and anti-slip mat, and what to keep in mind when attaching the wall anchors.

Use adjustable furniture glides under the feet. They help to easily compensate for height differences. Non-slip pads underneath ensure stability.

Wall mounting the shelf is absolutely recommended

This is the most important point. Without wall mounting, the shelf won’t be stable on carpet.

Alternatively, you can connect the shelf to heavier furniture or secure it flexibly with clamp brackets.
