GujanHello everyone,
I have owned several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series for some time and would like to maintain the natural beauty and durability of the wood surfaces for as long as possible. Despite regular cleaning and care, I have recently noticed some slight dulling and a few minor scratches that bother me a bit.
Therefore, my question is: What specific maintenance tips help keep IKEA Hemnes wood looking nice for longer? I am particularly interested in the best cleaning methods, whether special oils, waxes, or polishes are recommended, and how often these treatments should ideally be applied. Are there also things to avoid, such as certain cleaning agents or moisture?
I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences, proven methods, or mistakes. Thanks in advance!

To care for IKEA Hemnes wood, there are some important points that help keep the surface looking good for a long time:
- Clean preferably with a soft, slightly damp cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood.
- Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive sponges to protect the surface.
- Occasionally apply a thin layer of high-quality wood oil if needed – this seals and nourishes the surface.
- Avoid furniture waxes or polishes containing silicones or solvents, as they can cause long-term damage.
- Be careful with heat and direct sunlight; always use at least a matte tablecloth or protective mat.
Common mistakes include cleaning too often or using too much water and using all-purpose cleaners, which can accelerate damage.
By following these guidelines, the Hemnes wood will stay beautiful much longer.

Oh yes, Hemnes wood is really attractive, but unfortunately not extremely durable.
I always place a nice mat under my vases and only use microfiber cloths for dusting.
I completely agree. These can dull the surface or even cause discoloration.
One more tip: If you want to oil the wood, use linseed oil or a specifically recommended wood oil. And never apply it too thickly.

What helps me is having a lot of patience when drying after using a damp cloth. I’ve noticed that small water marks usually appear because of improper drying.
Are there people here who have had very good experiences with specific care products? I often hesitate to try anything new on expensive items.

To protect the light, oiled surface of the Hemnes furniture and keep it looking fresh for a long time, the following points should be considered:
- Damp cleaning is acceptable, but never wet, to avoid water damage
- Follow up with drying using a soft cloth is important
- Use natural oils such as linseed oil or beeswax care products that are free from harmful substances
- Avoid direct sunlight, as the light wood can darken or fade
- Protect from heat: use coasters or heat-resistant pads under hot drinks or cookware
The wood is durable when care and handling are combined carefully. A light re-oiling once a year is fine; too much treatment can weigh down the surface and attract dirt.
