Heinrich54 Feb 2016 09:37Hello everyone, I recently bought a standard Ikea Pax wardrobe and am now wondering how many shelves can actually be installed in one of these units. Specifically, I’m interested in the maximum number of shelves recommended by the manufacturer, without compromising stability and functionality. I understand that the height and depth of the wardrobe influence how many shelves make sense, but I’m looking for a clear guideline for the Pax units with the typical dimensions of 236 cm (93 inches) height and 50 cm (20 inches) depth. Does anyone have experience or reliable information about the maximum number of shelves in a Pax wardrobe? That would be very helpful, thanks!

Franklin364 Feb 2016 10:19Hello Heinrich5, I’m happy to provide you with a structured answer. A standard Ikea Pax wardrobe with a height of 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) has a total of 11 drilling rows on each side panel for shelves. However, the maximum number of shelves should not be confused with the number of drilling holes. It is often recommended to install 5 to 7 shelves to ensure sufficient storage space and maintain stability.
Here is a brief overview:
- Pax units with a height of 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) have about 11 drilling rows per side panel
- Each shelf uses two drilling holes (left and right)
- The recommended maximum number is usually 7 shelves, including the base panel
It is important to consider the load capacity of the shelves. While more shelves provide more compartments, carrying heavy weight on individual shelves can become problematic. I hope this helps!

You could practically put shelves everywhere, but who wants to live like a bookworm in a stacked maze? 😄 I’d say 6 shelves is the sweet spot. Enough surface for your treasures, but still some space at the top and bottom for larger items. This way, the wardrobe remains stable and still looks good!
