Hello everyone,

I have the following concern and would like to hear your experiences and tips: My KALLAX shelving unit quickly collects dust in its open compartments, especially crumbs from snacks that I sometimes place there or eat nearby. This makes cleaning quite time-consuming, and I feel that this pattern of crumb and dust buildup is not only unhygienic but also makes the shelf look untidy quickly.

So my specific question is: What practical tips do you have for organizing or using the KALLAX to minimize the chances of crumbs and dust accumulating in the shelf? Do you use covers, special inserts, or other clever solutions that have proven effective in daily use?

I’m looking forward to your ideas, especially simple solutions that are easy to implement and not too complicated to handle. Thanks in advance!

Hello li-pu34,

I know your problem very well; the KALLAX in my living room is also constantly a collection point for crumbs and dust, especially when there are children in the house, which can be really annoying. What I do now is put fabric bins into a few compartments that I take out and wipe down regularly (about every 2 weeks). The advantage is that these bins keep the dust out, and if something does fall in, it stays inside the bin instead of directly on the shelf.

Also, I try not to eat right next to the shelf – which can be difficult sometimes – but this really helps reduce the amount of crumbs that can fall into the shelf in the first place.

I completely agree, which is why I think it’s important to be able to clean the shelf easily without a huge effort.

Maybe you’ve already tried the bin solution? How about your cleaning routine, have you tried anything yet?

Very interesting question. I have approached the issue of dust and crumbs in the KALLAX somewhat systematically, so here is my approach:

First: The KALLAX is essentially an open system with many edges and seams that look good but unfortunately collect dust. This cannot be completely prevented by design.

1. Use dust protection adhesive strips: I have attached transparent dust protection strips to the back corners and lower edges to prevent dust from settling in the seams. Important: The strips must be cleaned regularly; otherwise, you will just have a larger dust layer.

2. Boxes and baskets: I also recommend using storage boxes, preferably with lids, as this prevents crumbs from spreading in the open compartments. The lids do hinder quick access, but you can, for example, leave an opening at the top or use models with sliding lids.

3. Shelf surface: Another point is the shelf surface itself. If you have not painted the shelf, sealing it or using protective mats on the shelves is recommended to prevent crumbs from settling or penetrating into the wood structure.

4. Cleaning: For regular cleaning, I recommend not using a damp cloth but rather an antistatic cloth to avoid stirring up dust. If crumbs have accumulated anyway, a small handheld vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, which fits easily into the compartments, helps.

I would be interested to know how often you clean the shelf and whether you already use specific cleaning products or tools?

Exactly, lids on boxes are worth their weight in gold here.

I fully agree with Joe52 and TYRELL – boxes really are the best protection if you don’t want to clean every day. And if you don’t have boxes, I use a fine duster as a quick solution and regularly dust all the compartments. It requires little effort and effectively removes even fine layers of dust.

What I would like to add: for crumbs, it also helps to generally eat in an area that is easy to clean and only bring food to the KALLAX by hand when you really want to place things there. This way, you avoid crumbs falling directly on the shelf.

In addition, I have placed a thin, washable plastic mat in one compartment, which I can easily take out and wipe clean. It sounds simple but helps a lot! 🙂

Hey li-pu34 and all other dust-fighting heroes :-)

I think a bit of humor makes the whole thing more enjoyable. You could call the KALLAX a “crumb castle” – it’s not dustproof right out of the box.

My little secret weapon: stick self-adhesive magnetic strips onto the shelves and then make or buy lightweight magnetic lids. The lids stay firmly in place, and you can open and close them like a mini cabinet 😉

This adds more organization and keeps crumbs and dust at bay to some extent. Of course, it’s not the cheapest DIY project, but for me, it was a small revolution!

If you’re into DIY solutions, I’d be happy to share more details here. And the idea with boxes is great too! Just make sure they have lids or, like me, use magnetic closures.

Simply use fabric boxes with lids.

Regularly shake them out and use a damp cloth to clean off dust.

Avoid placing food directly in the KALLAX compartment.

That’s all you need.
