lapascual21 Jul 2022 11:37Hello everyone,
I recently bought some BILLY shelves from IKEA and plan to assemble them myself. However, I’ve heard that the assembly can be quite complicated and time-consuming if you don’t know what to watch out for.
So, my specific question to the community is: Are there any concrete tips to make assembling BILLY shelves faster and easier? I’m especially interested in whether there are particular tools, tricks regarding the order of the steps, or other useful hacks that noticeably simplify the process and save time.
Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Are there any specific tips to make assembling BILLY shelves faster and easier? In general, I recommend sorting all screws and fittings carefully before starting and reading through the entire instruction manual once. This helps avoid surprises later on.
Another tip is to assemble the shelf on a soft surface to prevent scratches. For the screws, a cordless screwdriver with low torque is ideal to avoid overtightening.
Also, the back panel should be attached only at the end, as it limits flexibility during assembly. Following this order makes it easier to align the shelf.
These points mainly help make the assembly smoother and save time.

Attach the back panel last, as it restricts flexibility during assembly.Absolutely right! It also helped me to wipe the individual boards with a soft cloth beforehand – dust and manufacturing residue can make assembly more difficult.
One more little tip from me: a small piece of masking tape on the edges helps protect your fingernails when sliding the drill holes together. And if you’re using a screwdriver, try to use one with a magnetic tip so the screws don’t easily fall off.
Regarding the screws themselves – don’t tighten them too much, or the wood might swell or split. You need a bit of a delicate touch here! 🙂

Additionally, sorting screws by size and placing them in small containers is helpful. This way, you can find them faster and nothing gets lost.
If assembling multiple shelves, it is useful to fully complete all parts of one shelf before moving on to the next. This prevents initial confusion caused by mixed parts.
Finally, I recommend not following the instructions rigidly from start to finish but also looking at the last steps when you encounter difficult parts to understand the overall goal. This helps avoid mistakes at the beginning.

A screwdriver with a magnetic tip helps so the screws don’t fall off so easily.Exactly! Additionally, I would recommend setting the cordless drill to a low torque beforehand – this is gentler on the delicate wooden parts.
And one last small tip: when inserting the shelves, move them slightly back and forth instead of just pressing them in at a fixed angle. This prevents damage and saves you from the feeling of fiddling around with levers or using excessive force.
With these tricks, assembling the BILLY will not only go faster but will also be more enjoyable! 😉 Good luck with the build.
