Hello everyone,

I am considering purchasing an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe because I really like the design and price. However, I am concerned about the stability of the wardrobe after long-term use. Specifically, I am interested in how durable the carcass and individual components—such as the doors and shelves—are after several years. Are there any experiences indicating whether the wardrobe becomes wobbly over time, or if the materials and joints hold up well under continuous use?

Another question is whether the screws or fittings can be tightened after some time or if this often causes problems. It would also be important for me to know how the wardrobe performs with frequent opening and closing of the doors, and whether the surface or edges are prone to wear.

I look forward to your feedback—ideally from people who have been using the wardrobe for a longer period.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Your questions are well structured, and I can share some insights from my many years of experience with the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe.

- Stability: The wardrobe is made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which can be more susceptible to long-term stress compared to solid wood. Under normal use—meaning not overloaded—the frame generally remains stable. Issues with wobbling usually occur only if the connecting screws are not tightened properly.

- Doors and fittings: The hinges are of good quality but tend to develop slight play after about 2-3 years. Retightening is possible and necessary, as the material settles slightly over time.

- Surface: The melamine coating is fairly resistant to scratches, but sharp edges or impacts can quickly cause small chips.

Conclusion: With normal use, the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe is solid and functional. However, if the piece is heavily loaded or moved frequently, it is important to regularly retighten screws and handle the surface with care.

I hope this is helpful.

I can confirm this from my own experience – tightening the hinges was really necessary after about 2.5 years, but this is not due to a quality issue; it’s more related to physical factors 😅.

What I really appreciate about this cabinet is its clean design and that – despite the rather economical construction – it hardly wobbles once it is properly installed.

Tip: If you tend to move the door abruptly, you risk loosening the screws faster. The gentler the use, the longer everything will hold! 😉

So far, the surface on mine has hardly any marks, but I deliberately avoided placing the edges where the furniture might often get bumped.

Conclusion: Great value for money; if you take good care of the cabinet, it will last a long time.

I’d like to share my experience here because I’m interested in this topic and know firsthand the issues with budget furniture.

About five years ago, I bought a Brimnes cabinet and used it daily. At first, everything was very stable, but after around three years, I started having problems with the screws: the doors became harder to open, and some screws loosened slightly. After tightening them several times, it improved again.

What bothers me a bit is that the material isn’t very durable on some edges. When I moved, I had to be careful not to bump the cabinet too much.

On the other hand, with a bit of maintenance—like tightening screws and handling it carefully—you can definitely enjoy it for several years.

So, I would recommend not only focusing on initial impressions but also investing some time in upkeep if you want to maintain stability in the long run.

Wow, five years of daily use is a great reference point! Thanks for sharing!

I’ve owned my Brimnes wardrobe for nearly two and a half years now and I’m still very pleased with it. It stands firmly, and even though I open the doors quite often, there are no issues with the hinges.

However, I have noticed that you need to be careful when placing heavy items on the shelves. You shouldn’t exceed the load capacity, otherwise the shelves bend quickly.

My tip: If you want your wardrobe to be more sturdy, you can add extra metal brackets behind the back panel. That makes it even more stable and prevents wobbling.

Overall, I think the value for money with the Brimnes is just excellent. Just a little care and it will bring you joy! 😊
