Hello everyone,
I am considering buying an IKEA Brimnes bedroom set, mainly because of the included drawers. My specific question is: Are the IKEA Brimnes drawers really sturdy enough to safely store heavy items like stacks of books, electronic devices, or tools without sagging, getting damaged, or the runners bending over time?
I know IKEA usually provides a standard load capacity, but how does this hold up in real life? Are there any users with long-term experience using Brimnes drawers under heavy loads?
I look forward to detailed feedback, maybe also some suggestions for alternatives if Brimnes is not suitable for this purpose.

I’ve had my Brimnes chest of drawers for about a year now, and honestly, I do store some pretty thick books in there from time to time. So far, there’s been no sagging, but like with any furniture, don’t overload them unnecessarily.
The runners seem sturdy enough for everyday use, but I wouldn’t recommend putting very heavy tools in there, as that puts more strain on the wood and the runners. For typical home use, there’s definitely some margin, just don’t overdo it 😉.
I would like to add a few technical details to the discussion.
The IKEA Brimnes drawers typically consist of a combination of particleboard and MDF, paired with metal runners. The load capacity of the drawers is usually specified in the product description as about 15 to 20 kilograms per drawer (approximately 33 to 44 pounds), which is perfectly adequate for standard applications.
Important to note:
- The runners are ball bearing, allowing for smooth opening, but they are not designed for industrial heavy-duty use.
- The cabinet construction limits the load capacity of the individual drawers, which can be critical especially when storing heavy tools or similar items without support.
If a drawer is consistently loaded to its limit, there is a risk that the runners may warp or the drawer itself may sag slightly. Uneven loading (e.g., placing all weight on the front edge) can also cause increased wear on the mechanism.
I would be interested to know if you have more detailed information about the heavy items you plan to store, so I can address the load profiles more precisely.

For me, it mainly concerns books, sometimes in larger quantities (up to 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per drawer), as well as items like camera equipment (with bag, about 7–10 kg (15–22 lbs)) and occasionally tools such as screwdrivers or small power tools, though these are stored rather irregularly.
I want to avoid the drawers beginning to stick or sag after 1–2 years; my primary concern is long-term durability under these conditions.
Regarding the load capacity of the Brimnes drawers, I would like to add the following:
1. Maximum load: Ikea usually specifies the maximum load per drawer during assembly, which you should definitely not exceed, even though the material can sometimes handle more.
2. Even load distribution is essential – heavy items should be distributed as evenly as possible to avoid point loads.
3. Assembly considerations: The drawer runners must be installed correctly and securely to ensure the drawers operate smoothly and last a long time.
4. For heavy loads, it is worth reinforcing the drawer bottom from underneath, for example with a thin wooden board or metal plates, if you are handy.
If your loads mainly consist of books and camera equipment weighing 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per drawer, the Brimnes drawers should work well with proper use. Tools that are significantly heavier should be stored on other shelves.
In conclusion: Regularly checking and, if necessary, adjusting the drawer runners will extend the lifespan.
