gulehauI have a question for the community: Which maintenance products are recommended for BILLY wood veneer?
I own several BILLY bookcases with the classic birch wood veneer and want to take the best possible care of them to protect the veneer from scratches, moisture damage, and fading caused by UV radiation. I am especially interested in what types of cleaners or care products are suitable for the thin veneer, as harsh products can quickly cause damage.
Does anyone know of products that have proven effective in everyday use, or are there perhaps homemade methods that make sense? Tips on proper application would also be greatly appreciated.

Which care products are recommended for BILLY wood veneer? For the wood veneer on BILLY shelves, I generally recommend mild, pH-neutral cleaners that are specifically designed for wood. Stronger polish or wax products should be used sparingly, as they can be too harsh on the thin veneer.
A good option is a gentle wood care spray or a damp microfiber cloth with a small amount of wood floor soap. It is important not to get the veneer too wet and to dry the surface afterward.
For long-lasting protection, you can occasionally apply a special wood protective oil finish, but be careful to avoid staining from over-application.
It’s best to test any product first on an inconspicuous area to see how the veneer reacts.
As an additional clear recommendation: For BILLY wood veneer, cleaning with a slightly damp microfiber cloth without any additives, or at most with a pH-neutral wood wax cloth, is advisable.
For maintenance, products like "olive oil wood care" are popular, but their effectiveness on veneers is limited due to the thin layer and can lead to build-up if overdosed.
I would definitely advise against aggressive or silicone-containing polishes, as they leave residues that make the veneer more vulnerable to damage.
In short: gentle cleaning, sparing maintenance, avoiding moisture, and no harsh chemicals.

Intensive polishes or waxes should be used sparingly

Does anyone know of products that have proven reliable in everyday use?I can only agree that caring for wood veneer is a real challenge! For my BILLY shelves, I use "Livos Wood Oil" (organic quality), which is truly excellent! 🙂 It not only protects the surface but also nourishes it at the same time. I have noticed that the veneer feels much better afterwards and also gains a nice shine without looking artificial.
Just a tip: Please don’t apply too much and always spread it evenly! My success formula is to care for it every 3 to 6 months depending on use, and otherwise regularly dust with a dry, soft cloth.
Good luck and enjoy your BILLY shelves!

"Livos wood oil" (organic quality), that is really brilliant! The recommendation is understandable, but I have some reservations because oils and waxes can clog the veneer, which may damage the material over time.
In my opinion, the risk of over-treating veneered wood should not be underestimated.
It would be interesting to know if there are any studies or practical experiences showing how oils affect the very thin veneer of BILLY compared to just cleaning and occasional polishing.

Which care products are recommended for BILLY wood veneer?I think a pragmatic approach is better: thorough but gentle cleaning, little or no care products, and instead protection from UV light and moisture exposure.
Perhaps we can agree here on a recommendation that is evidence-based.
