Hello everyone, I have several Billy shelves from IKEA at home that I really appreciate – practical, simple, and affordable. However, there is an issue with my cat occasionally scratching the shelves, which unfortunately causes light to moderate scratches on the surface.

I am particularly interested in methods or materials to best protect Billy shelves from pet scratches. Are there any proven protective films, special varnishes, or perhaps simple tricks that prevent damage without affecting the appearance?

I am looking for solutions that last in the long term and are suitable for the typical material of Billy shelves (particleboard with melamine coating). Thanks for any tips and experiences!

To prevent scratches on BILLY shelves, I recommend the following measures:

1. Protective films: Transparent, scratch-resistant PVC films specifically designed for furniture.
2. Surface sealing: Clear, matte varnishes based on acrylic or polyurethane are suitable.
3. Distraction with appropriate scratching furniture: Protects the surface and reduces the animals' interest.
4. Mechanical barriers: Edge protectors made of silicone or plastic that make scratching unattractive.

The most effective approach is combining protective films with providing alternative scratching options at the same time.

Self-adhesive protective film is great. Simply cut a piece and stick it onto the vulnerable surfaces. Catnip on scratching boards helps to distract the cats.

Privacy films with a matte surface reduce reflections and are more resistant to scratches. This effectively protects BILLY shelves without negatively affecting their appearance.

That makes sense. For BILLY shelves, do you prefer using single sheets of protective film or full fronts?

And how long does such a film usually last? Should one expect to replace it every few months? Thanks in advance for the helpful tips so far!

In my cat’s case, they usually last anywhere from six months to a year. If there’s a lot of scratching, wear becomes visible quite fast, of course. But it’s definitely cheaper than replacing entire shelves. And applying them is really enjoyable—you almost feel like a craftsman 😄

For installation: It’s best to cover entire fronts or edges firmly, as small pieces tend to come off easily. That way you ensure the best protection. Good luck!
