Hello everyone,
I have several KALLAX shelves from IKEA in my apartment, which I have fitted with doors. Unfortunately, the doors often close quite loudly and sometimes somewhat abruptly. This is especially disturbing in the evening or at night. Now I am curious how you have modified or equipped your KALLAX doors to ensure they close quietly and smoothly. Do you use special dampers, are there specific hinges or methods to improve the closing mechanism? I look forward to your experiences and tips, including any advice on necessary tools or materials.
Thanks in advance!

pautanner5 Apr 2019 09:21Hello! 🙂 For me, it’s these self-adhesive foam strips that I attached to the door frames. They are inexpensive, easy to install, and really make the doors much quieter. No more banging, and the effect is surprisingly good!
Hello GLA59,
I am familiar with this issue, as I also use KALLAX doors. Basically, there are two ways to address it: either by retrofitting dampers or by adjusting or replacing the hinges.
Simple rubber buffers or self-adhesive felt strips at the contact points can reduce rattling. For a truly smooth closing, however, I recommend so-called soft-close hinges, which slow down the closing motion. These can often be installed on KALLAX doors as well, but they require a bit more precision during installation and possibly new drill holes.
In terms of tools, you will need a screwdriver, possibly a cordless drill, and a small drill bit. For some options, a file can also be helpful if you need to adjust the drill holes.
I am happy to answer any further questions if you decide on an option.

Soft-close hinges that slow down the closing actionCould you explain in more detail how soft-close hinges work? I know there are different models, but what is the technical principle behind the damping effect? Do they also work on doors made of plastic or only on wood? And how complex is the installation if you have no experience with furniture making?
