Elmiraneo9 Aug 2021 14:07Hello everyone, I am currently planning some furniture pieces from the Ikea Platsa series and have come across the question of whether there are versions of these furniture items equipped with magnetic closing mechanisms.
Specifically, I am interested in whether Ikea offers doors or drawers for PLATSA cabinets or dressers that use magnetic closures, meaning they operate without conventional snap locks or mechanical handles.
I want to ensure that the doors close well while also being as quiet and smooth to use as possible. If anyone has experience with PLATSA furniture and its closing methods: Are magnetic solutions available as a standard option or as accessories?
Or do I need to modify the furniture or use separate magnetic locks to achieve a magnetic closure? Thank you very much for your opinions and advice!

Hello, PLATSA furniture from Ikea does not come with built-in magnetic closing mechanisms by default.
This means you won’t find doors or drawers with integrated magnetic catches directly from Ikea.
If desired, separate magnetic catches, which are available at hardware stores, can be installed.

As an addition: Ikea PLATSA systems typically come with traditional hinge and drawer mechanisms, where doors and fronts are closed using mechanical handles or push-latch locks.
Official information from Ikea confirms that integrated magnetic locking mechanisms are not included in the range.
Besides the option of retrofitting magnetic catches, there is also the possibility of installing damping systems (soft-close), which are not necessarily magnetic.
For a magnetic solution, corresponding magnetic catches must be purchased separately and installed by the user.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any built-in magnetic closures on my PLATSA cabinets. However, I bought some from a hardware store and installed them myself afterward, which was quite easy!
If you’re reasonably handy, I definitely recommend it. There are various magnets with different holding strengths, so there’s something for everyone! 😊

The good thing is: you can easily add magnetic catches yourself without causing significant damage to the furniture.
And hey, if you feel like experimenting, you can even bring a bit of DIY charm into your living room! 😉🔧
To delve a bit deeper into the technical side: The Ikea PLATSA series typically uses hinges and drawer slides with traditional mechanical latches. A magnetic locking mechanism usually works by having a metal plate mounted on the frame and a magnet attached to the door or drawer.
Since Ikea PLATSA does not come with pre-drilled holes or mounting points for magnetic locks, retrofitting them involves additional steps:
- Identifying the suitable position for the magnet and the counterpart
- Drilling in the correct spot without damaging the structure
- Choosing magnet strengths that provide enough holding force but are not too strong
Moreover, it’s important to consider how a magnetic lock affects the feel of opening – magnets that are too strong may make opening difficult, while ones that are too weak will fail to serve their purpose.
If you plan to retrofit magnetic locks, I recommend first measuring the doors’ dimensions and weights, then looking for magnets that match these parameters. This process is definitely feasible but requires technical knowledge and a delicate touch.
