tublaHello everyone, I am currently looking into whether and how IKEA Hemnes furniture can be made more child-friendly. The Hemnes series is quite popular due to its classic design and durability, but parents often face the challenge that while this furniture is solid, it is not specifically designed with the safety and needs of small children in mind. Are there any proven methods, such as modifications like corner protectors, different handles, or other safety measures, to make Hemnes furniture safer and more suitable for children? What experiences have you had with this? I am open to all practical as well as technically sound suggestions, especially regarding stability, injury risks, and the absence of harmful substances. Thanks in advance for your input!
Basically, Hemnes furniture is sturdy, but when it comes to child safety, taking precautions is advisable. Soft plastic corner protectors can be easily attached to all edges and reduce the risk of injuries. Additionally, it is important to secure furniture to the wall to prevent tipping accidents. There are also special handles with rounded edges that make replacing the original metal handles more child-friendly. IKEA furniture meets strict standards to be free of harmful substances, but I still recommend occasionally ventilating the room to minimize any possible emissions. In summary: corner protectors, wall anchoring, and child-safe handles are the three most important modifications.

Soft plastic corner protectors are easy to apply to all corners and reduce the risk of injury.I generally agree with this, but I would like to point out that many of these corner protectors are of low quality and can fall off after a short time or stick and leave adhesive residues. Additionally, they visually alter the originally clean Hemnes lines, which might bother some people. Therefore, the question arises whether simple corner protectors are really the best solution or if a custom furniture modification (such as professionally rounded wooden edges) would be more appropriate for parents. A complete child safety furniture set compatible with Ikea furniture would also be worth considering, if such a product exists.
I find this question very important because I often worry about how my kids handle sharp edges on desks or dressers. In addition to edge protectors, I have installed special child safety locks on all the drawers of Hemnes dressers to prevent children from pulling them out completely and potentially having heavy drawers fall on their feet. It feels safer, and at the same time, the kids learn to treat the furniture more respectfully. Another tip I can recommend is not placing furniture directly in walkways, which minimizes collisions or tripping hazards. Hemnes furniture is generally quite sturdy but not indestructible.

I recommend cushioning furniture legs with felt pads to prevent them from sliding easily during play. Also, Hemnes furniture, with its wooden material, pairs well with rounded plastic edges – which you can easily make yourself. This way, the concept is maintained, but it becomes safer for children.
