Hello everyone,
I own an Ikea Hemnes dresser with several drawers, which unfortunately have started to stick or catch when being pulled out or pushed in. It’s not a complete break or obvious scraping of the slides. Rather, it feels like certain spots or edges on the drawer slides are no longer running smoothly.
All the drawers are in regular use, and I suspect that due to the weight or frequent use, the mechanism (wooden rails combined with metal runners) may have shifted or worn down slightly.
I’m particularly interested in how to specifically identify these issues with Ikea Hemnes drawers, how to get the drawers moving smoothly again, and whether there are simple repair methods I can perform myself with basic tools.
I use the dresser daily, so I’d prefer to avoid fully disassembling it or ordering replacement parts if there’s an easier way.
Also, does anyone have experience with caring for the wooden components of the Ikea Hemnes to prevent edge wear or fraying that might cause the sticking?
Thanks for your advice!

Unevenness should be sanded down, and adjustment is done by slightly loosening and re-screwing in parallel. I will try to slightly loosen the wooden strips and carefully reposition them.

Be sure to pay close attention to preventing the wooden strips from swelling due to moisture. Thank you also for this advice. In fact, the Hemnes dresser is located close to a window, where heating air and low humidity sometimes cause fluctuations.
Are there any recommendations for maintenance products? Is it better to use transparent furniture oil or wax? I am unclear about the difference in the final result.

Are there any recommendations for care products? Is it better to use clear furniture oil or wax?For Hemnes wooden trim, furniture wax is generally recommended. Wax seals the surface without penetrating deeply.
It reduces friction and preserves the wood grain. Oil usually penetrates the wood, which can soften it and potentially worsen moisture-related issues.
Wax is also easier to apply spot-wise and to buff later.
A quick update from me:
Today, I removed the drawers and lightly sanded the wooden strips with 240-grit sandpaper. Then, I applied furniture wax using a soft cloth.
During reassembly, I made slight adjustments to the strips to compensate for any play. The result is much better: the drawers now slide much more smoothly and no longer catch.
Thank you all for the great advice!
I would definitely recommend this surface treatment, as it really made a big difference.
