Hello everyone, I recently purchased some furniture from the IKEA Malm series, including dressers and nightstands, and I want to securely and discreetly fasten them to the wall. My goal is to prevent the furniture from tipping over if children or pets bump into them, without the fastenings being visually noticeable or damaging the furniture. Are there proven methods for safely securing Malm furniture, which materials or brackets work best, and how can visible drill holes or damage to the furniture be avoided? I would appreciate any tips, experiences, or recommendations for specific accessories you can suggest.

Hello TILLTI,

Your question is spot on, especially with the Malm series, where wall mounting is particularly important because some pieces are quite tall and narrow, which can make them feel unstable. Generally, I use the wall mounting kits provided by IKEA, which usually include brackets and screws.

A key step is choosing the correct anchors or hooks for your wall – this depends on whether your wall is concrete or drywall. For concrete walls, I recommend heavy-duty anchors or metal expansion anchors; for drywall, use special hollow wall anchors or metal toggle bolts. Load capacity is crucial here to ensure the furniture stays secure under weight.

Most furniture has pre-drilled holes or attachment points where you can fix the brackets. To avoid visible screws, I suggest installing them on the inside edges or back panels where they won’t be seen.

If you prefer not to drill into the furniture, you might try special double-sided adhesive tapes, but keep in mind that stability is less reliable and this method is better suited for lightweight items.

Even more important is precise alignment before screwing in! Measure carefully, mark the drilling points, and check that the furniture sits flush against the wall to reduce stress on the mount.

Could you briefly mention what type of wall you have? That would help provide more accurate advice.

Thank you for your detailed response, Palenar. Most of my walls are drywall, which I forgot to mention. Therefore, I’m unsure which anchors will hold properly and how to prevent damage or breakouts in the wall. I also want to avoid damaging the furniture when installing the brackets – are there specific methods to follow?

Use special cavity anchors or metal toggle anchors for drywall

This is the key point when working with drywall. These anchors distribute the load behind the panel and prevent breakouts.

I recommend the following step-by-step procedure:

1. Accurately mark the spot on the wall where the fixture will be attached. A second pair of eyes can be helpful.

2. Use an angle bracket or metal corner bracket that is attached to the back of the furniture. These are usually quite small so they fit under the furniture edge.

3. Drill holes in the furniture with a sharp drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws to avoid splitting the wood.

4. Insert the cavity anchor or toggle anchor into the drywall. Make sure not to drill too close to the panel edges.

5. Screw the bracket securely into the wall with appropriate screws. The screws should be long enough to hold the anchor firmly.

6. Attach the furniture and connect it to the brackets. Some IKEA sets use small clips or screws that cover the brackets.

7. Optionally, you can insert felt or rubber pads between the furniture and the wall for fine adjustment to protect the furniture surface and wall, and to compensate for minor unevenness.

This should securely fasten your Malm dresser or nightstand without causing invisible damage.

How large and heavy are your furniture pieces exactly? This helps in choosing the right fastening materials.

My largest dresser is about 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide, 78 cm (30.7 inches) high, and weighs around 40 kg (88 lbs), while the nightstand is considerably lighter at about 15 kg (33 lbs). I want everything to be securely fixed to the wall since I have small children who sometimes bump into the furniture. Are there any tips on how to discreetly attach the brackets to the back or corners? I’m concerned that large brackets might spoil the appearance.

For the dresser, you can use flat Z brackets that can be quite discreetly hidden along the top edge. Simply attach them inside at the back near the top and connect to the wall. For the bedside table, self-adhesive angle brackets are an option, but only for light weights.
