Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a kitchen island using Ikea Metod modules that will provide both storage space and an integrated seating area for two people. I want to keep it modular and make the most of the existing Ikea kitchen units to keep costs and effort to a minimum.

My questions are:
- Which Metod components are best suited as a base for the island when storage and accessibility are important?
- How can I create the seating area securely and stably without limiting the island’s flexibility?
- Are there practical tips for connecting or fixing the modules together?
- What should be considered when planning and assembling to avoid problems with functionality later on (e.g., ventilation, door/drawer opening angles, stability)?

I look forward to hearing your experiences, tips, or even critical advice to help me plan and carry out this project successfully.

Hello LEALF,

here is a structured overview for building your Ikea Metod kitchen island with storage and seating area:

- Module selection for storage: Metod base cabinets with drawers (e.g., 80x60 cm (31½x24 inches) or 60x60 cm (24x24 inches)) are ideal. They provide plenty of storage space and practical load capacity.
- Integrating the seating area: For the seating area, I recommend a countertop with an overhang on the side or on a narrow end. You can place bar stools there. Use sturdy legs or additional braces under the countertop for stability.
- Securing the modules: Use the Ikea connecting fittings (Metod-specific screws and brackets) so the modules hold together securely but can still be disassembled if needed.
- Planning tips: Maintain at least 100 cm (39 inches) of clearance between the island and the rest of the kitchen to allow doors and drawers to open easily. The countertop should be well ventilated to avoid heat build-up. When installing the seating surface, consider any height differences (standard countertop height 91 cm (36 inches), seating surface approx. 65–70 cm (26–28 inches)).

Common mistake: Insufficient stability of the seating surface. Pay attention to cantilevered countertops and reinforce them as needed with a supporting frame depending on the material.

Good luck with your project!

It’s best to use 80x60 cm (32x24 inches) base cabinets with drawers. They are sturdy and provide a lot of storage space. Install an overhanging countertop on the seating side. Don’t forget to add extra support for that.

I can confirm that. At first, I was worried about the stability, but with some reinforcement at the seating areas, it works perfectly.

I would recommend that too. My flexible seating island gained a lot of character from it, and I enjoy using the area daily as a small gathering spot in the kitchen.

If you’re concerned about the adhesive or connection of the modules, use a few more brackets and screws to ensure everything is rock solid.
