Hello everyone,

I am planning to build an IKEA METOD kitchen island myself, with plenty of storage and an integrated seating area, and I would like to gather your experiences and recommendations.

My goal is to create as much storage as possible without the island appearing too bulky. The seating should be comfortable while not taking up too much space. I have considered fitting the second row of base cabinets with tall drawers and adding a counter bar in front for stools.

I am particularly interested in how you ensure stability in such constructions, which worktops are suitable to make the seating surface functional and durable, and how to best plan the necessary depth of the base cabinets when including seating areas.

Additionally, I would appreciate any tips on assembly or useful accessories, such as hinges or stool heights that fit well with the island.

I look forward to your inputs!

Hello danbashk67,

Regarding your plan to build an IKEA METOD kitchen island with plenty of storage and a seating area, there are a few important points you should consider.

First, about stability: METOD base cabinets are generally sturdy, but a kitchen island that also serves as a seating area needs a solid connection between the individual cabinets. I recommend mechanically fastening the modules together and additionally installing a stable base panel that acts as a foundation. Avoid placing the island solely on adjustable feet, as this can lead to instability.

Second, about the countertop: A thicker countertop—at least 28mm (1.1 inches), preferably thicker—made of HPL or solid wood is ideal if it is also intended to function as a bar-height seating surface. Since this area is subjected to higher stress when sitting (knees may bump against it), the countertop should be securely fastened and possibly reinforced with support beams underneath.

Regarding depth: For the seating area, aim for a total height of about 110cm (43 inches), which includes the base cabinet (around 60cm (24 inches)), countertop, and an additional top panel or bar surface. The seating surface itself should be approximately 60cm (24 inches) deep to ensure sufficient legroom.

For accessories: I would recommend soft-close hinges and full-extension drawer glides to make the most of the storage space. You can also add a small footrest at the seating area to significantly improve comfort.

What is your available space and what dimensions are you planning for the island? Then I can give you advice on the optimal selection and arrangement of the cabinets.

Solid wood or HPL countertop, at least 28 mm (1 inch) thick, seat height approximately 110 cm (43 inches), securely fasten cabinets. Footrest improves seating comfort.

Thank you for the detailed post!

My room is about 4 meters wide, and I’m planning an island roughly 160 cm (63 inches) wide, 90 cm (35 inches) deep, and around 110 cm (43 inches) high. I would like to have a seating area at the front with a raised countertop of about 30 cm (12 inches).

It’s important to me to use as many drawers as possible with higher load capacity and maybe include inserts for cutlery and spices.

What do you think about reinforcing the base frame with additional cross supports? Should I then plan for a standard worktop height (about 90 cm (35 inches)) and add the raised countertop on top?

Are there any METOD options for extra deep cabinets, or would I need to plan more of a combination?

Yes, that’s exactly how I would do it. A solid substructure with cross braces significantly improves overall stability and prevents the island from wobbling or warping.

A worktable height of 90 cm (35 inches) is standard, and the seating surface should be set to about 75 cm (30 inches). The counter can then be at approximately 110 to 115 cm (43 to 45 inches) total height. You can create this raised surface either with a thinner panel or a structural element that can be removed flexibly if you ever need more workspace.

Regarding cabinets, the METOD system offers 60 cm (24 inches) deep units, but there are also some models with 80 cm (31 inches) depth, for example from the GANDEBY range, which is another line that works well combined with METOD. This allows for more storage space behind the seating area. Alternatively, you can use pantry cabinets as a sideboard.

Are you planning water or electrical connections in the island? If so, you should plan the cabinet layout accordingly, especially if you want to integrate a dishwasher or sink, for example.

At the moment, I’m planning the island without a sink or cooktop; it is mainly intended to provide storage and seating.

I imagine two tall pull-out cabinets on the back side under the countertop offering plenty of space for pots, pans, and supplies, with a counter and two stools on the front side.

How would you estimate the weight of an island equipped like this? Will I need additional reinforcements in the countertop, or will the standard mounting of the support rails be sufficient?

Thanks for your assessment.
