Hello everyone, I’m currently facing a problem that many people assembling IKEA Metod cabinets at home are probably familiar with: during assembly, the individual cabinet carcasses or parts keep sliding around, which makes aligning them very difficult and frustrating. I’ve already tried assembling the cabinets on a smooth floor, which actually increases the slipping. Does anyone have tips or tricks on how to prevent the cabinets from moving so easily during assembly? I’m especially interested in a solution that mechanically limits movement without using tools or aids that could damage the surface. If anyone has experience with aids that protect and stabilize the floor or the cabinet sides, I’d also be very interested. Thanks in advance for your feedback and recommendations!

It is best to place non-slip mats under the cabinet parts, such as silicone mats or rubber pads. This will help prevent the cabinet carcasses from slipping. Additionally, I recommend positioning the cabinets against a wall and gradually securing them with screws.

To address this issue directly: Smooth floors naturally provide less grip. A proven method is to work on a non-slip mat, such as rubber or a thick carpet, which prevents the cabinets from sliding back and forth during assembly. Additionally, temporary small wedges or wooden blocks can be used to stabilize the cabinet carcasses before they are permanently fixed.

In my own experience, it helps not to place the parts directly on the floor but on sturdy blocks positioned under the corners. This allows for controlled fine adjustments without shifting the whole unit. After all, the angle during assembly matters—a slight incline can help stabilize contact points until the screws are secured.

That’s good advice, but I’ve also noticed that it’s not always enough if you don’t have a second person to help.

I recently tried assembling the Metod system on the floor and had exactly that problem – the boxes kept sliding apart. What helped me was applying gentle pressure between the cabinets and the wall so they wouldn’t wobble. I also found it useful to loosely hold individual modules together with clamps before inserting the fixing screws. This prevents movement and makes you feel more secure.

I understand how frustrating that can be, especially when working alone. Have you tried assembling the cabinets lying on their backs before final screwing? That sometimes helps stabilize them.
