Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen unit and want to install integrated lighting at the same time. Since it is important to me to have good illumination on the work surface, I am looking for tips on planning and implementing the lighting during the kitchen assembly.

Specifically, I am interested in the following points:
- Which types of lighting are best suited (LED strips, spotlights, etc.)?
- How can I integrate the power supply into the cabinet units as neatly as possible without visible cables?
- Are there any special installation tips for the Metod modules to properly secure the lighting?
- Are power strips inside the cabinets useful for powering the lights?
- And in general: What is the best approach to ensure that everything looks safe and tidy in the end?

I am fairly skilled with DIY, but want to avoid mistakes, so I appreciate any experiences and practical advice. Thanks in advance!

Hello Giancarlo8,

I completely understand that having good, clean lighting is important to you, especially in the kitchen where you need to see clearly. For me, it was also a source of uncertainty because depending on the type of lighting, you have to do a lot of adjustments.

What helped me:
- LED strips mounted under the wall cabinets for even lighting.
- I installed the power supply by running cables behind the cabinets, which requires careful planning!
- Use a power strip inside a cabinet that you connect to an outlet. You can then supply power to the LED lighting through the power strip, making for a simple connection.

It sounds simple, but cable management can be tricky. I also spent some time figuring out how to lay the cables so they wouldn’t be pulled or pinched.

If you need more details, feel free to ask!

Hello everyone,

I would like to offer a brief guide on how to effectively and neatly install an IKEA Metod kitchen unit with integrated lighting:

1. Planning:
- First, decide on the type of lighting. LED strips with warm white light are energy-efficient and easy to dim, while spotlights provide focused illumination.
- Measure your kitchen carefully and plan which wall cabinets should be illuminated.

2. Preparing the modules:
- Make sure that the Metod cabinets have openings for cable routing. Use the holes in the back panel or interior walls.
- Take your time to plan your electrical system. A power strip inside a base cabinet can be very practical.

3. Installing the lighting:
- Attach the LED strips using the included adhesive tape or screws. Check that the strips are positioned precisely on the underside of the wall cabinets.
- Route the cables along the inside of the cabinets and secure them with cable clips so nothing hangs loose.

4. Electrical connections:
- Connect all lights to the power strip. Pay attention to the maximum allowed load per circuit.
- Before switching on, check all connections to ensure they are firmly seated.

5. Final tips:
- A dimmable control for the LEDs increases comfort.
- Document your wiring for future adjustments or troubleshooting.

Common mistakes include overlooking cable openings, using cables that are too short, and missing strain relief.

If you want, I can provide more details on any of these points.

I can definitely confirm that. During my installation, I had to disassemble everything afterward because one cable was too short. My advice: Leave a few centimeters (inches) extra cable at the start to give yourself more flexibility when routing.

Also, a note about power strips: They should really be installed inside a protected cabinet to prevent water damage or accidental unplugging. Covers are a good idea for this.

I really appreciate how clearly Landontau summarized the individual steps; it was very helpful for me too.

Hello Giancarlo8,

I’d like to add a few tips to the previous posts that are very helpful when integrating lighting into an IKEA Metod kitchen unit:

- When choosing LED lighting, pay attention to the color temperature: A bright, daylight-like light (around 4000K) is often more pleasant than very warm light.
- Watch the measurements: IKEA cabinet depths are standardized, but especially for installing lighting, you should measure carefully beforehand because some profiles may need to be recessed or adjusted.
- Respect the electrical limits: IKEA LED lighting often comes with small power supplies that should not be loaded beyond their specified capacity.
- For power supply, you can use these options:
- Routing cables through the back panel, taking care to do this neatly
- Cable ducts under the countertop or behind baseboards (kickboards/plinths)
- Some electrical strips or plugs even offer remote controls for dimming or switching, which makes operation much easier.
- Finally, before final installation, check that all lights work to avoid problems later on.

If you have specific questions about wiring or mounting, I’m happy to help!
