Hello everyone,

I’m currently exploring how to expand the Ikea Hemnes furniture series in a modular way—not just by buying individual additional pieces, but by creating compatible extensions that blend harmoniously with the existing furniture while remaining functional. My goal is to plan flexibly with cabinets, shelves, dressers, and possibly matching top units, and to adjust them later without having to purchase entirely new furniture.

I’m especially interested in which modules or accessories within the series or compatible with it connect well, how to add or combine storage space in a practical way without it looking like a random collection.

Are there specific compatibility rules for Hemnes? What about weight capacity when stacking furniture or placing pieces side by side? How do you manage possible differences in height or depth?

I look forward to hearing about your experiences, tips, and perhaps even plans or recommendations for useful additions. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

for Hemnes, you should especially pay attention to matching heights and depths to achieve a clean line. For example, you can place dressers and shelves side by side and secure them with brackets to prevent slipping. Unfortunately, there are few additional attachments for cabinet units, but modular systems from Ikea, such as the Platsa series, sometimes fit well when combined.

Roman39, I can understand that you want to stay as flexible as possible. At first, I also thought the Hemnes series was quite rigid, but with some patience, different parts can be combined. For me, it was important that the look didn’t appear fragmented – I used the same handles on different pieces of furniture to create a sense of unity. Sometimes it feels frustrating when the modules don’t fit together perfectly, but it’s worth persevering and being creative.

Hello Roman39,

I’m happy to provide you with a structured overview for modularly expanding the Hemnes series:

- Check height and depth compatibility: Hemnes furniture comes in standardized dimensions, for example, 50cm (20 inches) depth for many dressers and cabinets. Make sure to combine only pieces with the same or similar measurements.

- Connection options: Since Hemnes is not designed as a true modular system, I recommend securing the furniture mechanically with special connectors such as corner brackets or L-shaped connectors.

- Add-ons: There are no official add-on modules for the Ikea Hemnes series. You can create custom add-ons yourself, for example by using shelves or custom-made wooden panels, to maintain a cohesive look.

- Accessories: Handles and feet can be used consistently to ensure a uniform appearance.

- Load capacity: Avoid stacking modules that are too heavy. Use sturdy connections and secure wall fixings if necessary.

If you like, I can create a simple step-by-step guide on how to connect multiple dressers so they appear as a modular system.

Hello KUDAISY, I would definitely be interested in that! Especially how to securely connect the individual modules and which tools or materials you would recommend. Tips on how to visually harmonize the extensions are also very interesting to me. Thanks in advance!

Sure! Here is a brief guide for the safe and modular expansion of Hemnes dressers:

1. Module selection: Choose dressers with the same depth and as similar heights as possible – typical Hemnes heights are 90 cm (35 inches), 118 cm (46 inches), and 197 cm (78 inches).

2. Preparations: Get angle brackets and possibly wood glue. For larger furniture pieces, metal connectors are recommended.

3. Connection: Place the furniture side by side and fasten them with brackets on the inside at the contact points (so they remain discreet from the outside). Secure them with a cordless drill.

4. Visual unity: Replace handles or paint individual parts to achieve a uniform surface or color. Matching decorations or trim can also help.

5. Stability: For taller units, secure additionally with wall anchors.

Common mistakes include using screws that are too long (damaging the inside) and uneven joints. Therefore, test the material thickness beforehand.

If you have questions about any of the steps, I’m happy to assist.
