ᐅ How can you effectively clean IKEA Hemnes furniture after renovations?

Jordan7Hello everyone,
I recently carried out a renovation in my apartment, which caused a lot of dust, paint, and possibly other residues on the IKEA Hemnes furniture. My question is: How can Hemnes furniture be effectively cleaned after renovations without damaging the surface?
I understand that the furniture has a matte lacquer finish and is made of pine wood, which is not particularly resistant to chemical cleaners. I’m looking for a method or products that remove fine dust, possible paint mist, and other deposits without harming the protective layer or the wood itself.
At the same time, the cleaning process should be practical, as I have several pieces (wardrobe, dresser, nightstand) and would like to complete it somewhat quickly.
Does anyone have long-term experience or perhaps a tip for thoroughly cleaning Hemnes furniture after such dust and paint exposure while protecting it for the long term?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

When cleaning IKEA Hemnes furniture after renovation, it is important to pay special attention to the painted surface, as it is matte and sensitive.
- First, it is recommended to gently remove loose dust using a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a duster to avoid scratches.
- For removing paint mist or stubborn dust particles, a slightly damp cloth with lukewarm water and a mild dish soap is ideal. The cloth should never be too wet, as water can damage the surface.
- A proven cleaning solution is: 1 liter (35 fl oz) of water mixed with one pump of mild dish soap.
- After cleaning with the soapy solution, always wipe again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
- Always dry the furniture afterwards with a dry, soft cloth to prevent water spots.
Important: Avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive materials, or alkaline cleaning agents, as these can damage the paint layer.
Although this method requires some time, it is gentle and effective for multiple pieces of furniture. To help prevent future dirt buildup, treating with special furniture waxes designed for painted surfaces can be considered, which also offers long-term protection.
This is a structured and sustainable approach to cleaning Hemnes furniture, based on its material properties.

First, it is recommended to gently remove loose dust using a soft, dry microfiber cloth or duster to avoid scratches. That is a very good first step! Building on that, I would like to add that if paint has dripped onto the furniture, it should be handled carefully.
- Fresh paint spots can be gently blotted with warm water and a lint-free cloth, without rubbing.
- If the paint has already dried, using a solvent can be risky because the surface of Hemnes furniture is delicate. Mechanical removal methods are better—such as very carefully lifting the paint with a plastic scraper.
- If needed, a special, very mild wood cleaner that is safe for lacquered surfaces can also be used.
And one more tip: if there has been a lot of dust in the air during renovation, it can help to wipe the furniture with an anti-static cloth after the initial cleaning to prevent dust from sticking again.
Finally: avoid wiping the furniture too wet to prevent water marks and damage to the wood. It is better to work carefully and use only a small amount of liquid more frequently.

To avoid water stains and damage to the wood, it’s best not to wipe with too much moisture.I can only agree – that’s really the golden rule! 😄
After a renovation, I once dusted off my Hemnes wardrobe, and when I used too much water, I ended up with some unpleasant marks that were really frustrating. Since then, I always take a bit of patience and avoid soaking it!
Here are some additional tips I can recommend:
- For removing coarse dust, it’s best to use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to prevent scratching the wood.
- For the final touch, I use a lightly dampened cotton cloth – this even works well for removing paint pigments.
And hey, if you then apply a furniture oil or a wax-based polish, the Hemnes will look like new again! This really brings out the natural beauty of the pine wood – matte doesn’t have to mean dull 😉
Good luck and don’t worry, the Hemnes is tough but handle with care ❤️

I know the furniture as matte lacquered and made of pine wood, which is not necessarily very resistant to chemical cleaners. To revisit this important point: Matte lacquered surfaces are indeed more sensitive to abrasive contact and strong chemicals.
- Therefore, it is recommended not to use scouring agents, harsh solvents, or abrasive sponges.
- Also, intense direct exposure to steam cleaners or similar methods should be avoided, as they can soften or discolor the lacquer layer.
As an additional long-term care tip: Using a special furniture cleaner designed for lacquered wood surfaces once or twice a year can help remove any dirt buildup without drying out the wood.
In short: The best cleaning is gentle cleaning. Especially after renovations, it is better to clean gently and more frequently than to use aggressive and risky methods once.
