I have a Malm bed from Ikea that keeps squeaking even though all the screws are already tightened firmly. It’s quite annoying, especially since I’ve checked and retightened every visible fastener. The construction is relatively simple, but the noise doesn’t seem to come directly from any of the screws. I’m curious what might be causing the squeaking even though the screws are secure. Could it be material friction or specific points that should be checked for wear or overly tight fit? I would appreciate any well-informed guesses or tips, as I don’t want to take the bed apart without knowing where to focus.

Oh, I know that all too well!!! 😄 Squeaking beds are definitely the worst at night! Often, it’s not just the screws but those small wooden parts rubbing against each other. Even if the screws are tight, the wooden joints can creak or squeak with movement because the wood expands and contracts! Try treating the connection points with a drop of wax or a special furniture oil – sometimes that works wonders! Don’t give up, it will get better :-)

I understand your frustration; it’s really annoying when the bed keeps making noises. I had a similar issue with another Ikea bed, and for me, it was due to small wooden slats that no longer fit perfectly. Even with tight screws, slight gaps in the wood or small unevenness can cause squeaking. If I were you, I would lightly sand the contact surfaces and check if they fit together well. Please don’t get discouraged—sometimes it’s the small details that are easy to overlook.

Squeaking in furniture like the MALM bed, even when screws are tightly fastened, is a common issue usually caused by friction between wooden surfaces or at connection points. The steel screws hold the parts together mechanically, but wood components expand and contract due to changes in temperature and humidity, creating slight movement. A helpful solution is to use felt pads or a thin layer of wax (e.g., beeswax) at critical contact points. Additionally, check whether metal or plastic inserts in the screw holes are damaged or too loose, as this can also cause noise.

Check whether the screws in the anchors are really secure. The anchors in the wood can loosen even if the screws are tight. A horizontal squeaking noise often results from friction between the slatted frame and the bed frame – also inspect the support points.

I’m happy to help. Your MALM bed is creaking even though the screws are tightly fastened, which you described very well. This is often a material or friction issue. Wood naturally expands and contracts, and small wood particles or coatings can start to rub at connection points. Often, applying furniture wax or a solid lubricant (e.g., silicone spray) carefully to all places where wood meets wood or metal meets wood can help.

Check whether the screws are really firmly seated in the dowels.

This is especially important because tight screws don’t automatically mean that the dowels or joint holes are still intact. If the joint surface is not perfectly even anymore, rubbing will occur. Also, make sure the slatted frame is properly positioned and that there are no loose ends.

If the noise is very persistent, adding rubber or felt strips at the supports can help reduce mechanical noises. I hope this helps you!
