vinhamza471 Mar 2020 08:23Hello everyone, I recently got an IKEA Malm bed and noticed that it’s quite noisy when I move or lie on it. It squeaks and creaks in various places, which really disturbs my sleep. The bed frame is supported by a wide slatted base that isn’t brand new either. I’ve already tried tightening the screws, but the problem persists. Does anyone have tips on how to effectively eliminate this squeaking? Are there any special tricks or products you would recommend without having to take the whole bed apart or buy a new one? Many thanks in advance!
Hey vinhamza47, I know all about that annoying squeaking on a Malm bed! 😊 It’s usually caused by small movements in the wood joints or screws that loosen over time from constant lying and turning. I’d recommend first tightening all screws and connection points firmly – sometimes that’s all it takes. If that doesn’t help, I find a small amount of lubricant, like WD-40 or bicycle oil, works well on spots where wood meets wood or metal meets wood. Be careful to use it sparingly and avoid spraying it on the slatted frame! And very important: sometimes the slatted frame itself is squeaking, so it’s worth checking all the connections there too. Good luck, fingers crossed! 😉
To troubleshoot squeaking IKEA Malm beds, a systematic approach is recommended: 1. Completely loosen all screws at the connecting points, then tighten them again with the correct torque to relieve material stress. 2. Check whether wooden slats or joints are causing friction—if necessary, insert thin felt or plastic washers. 3. Apply lubricants such as silicone or Teflon spray on moving parts to reduce friction. 4. Inspect the slatted frame for wear or deformation that could cause noise. 5. Finally, apply weight to the bed multiple times and check if the noises persist. These steps address the physical causes of noise due to friction and mechanical movement of components.
I can understand how annoying squeaking at night can be, especially when you just want to relax. Maybe you could also pay attention to whether the noise gets louder at certain times of the day or with specific movements? Sometimes it really helps to carefully take everything apart and inspect the parts, as small inaccuracies during assembly are often the cause. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to guide you step by step – no one has to deal with this kind of problem alone!

vinhamza471 Mar 2020 12:03Thanks in advance for the tips! I’m wondering whether the squeaking is more likely coming from the joints in the frame or the slats. The slats are made of wood and are somewhat worn. Could it be that small shifts in the slat base cause more tension in the overall frame? Like some kind of chain reaction? I assembled the bed myself but didn’t tighten the screws very firmly, so that might already be the reason. Should I take the entire bed apart and reassemble it, or is it enough to just tighten all the screws?
