Hello everyone, I am planning to incorporate some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series into my apartment, but I am facing the challenge of visually adapting it to my existing interior style, which is more modern Scandinavian with clean lines and light colors. My specific question is: How can I visually modify or complement the Hemnes furniture so that it doesn’t appear too bulky or rustic, but instead fits harmoniously into the overall design? I am particularly interested in whether it is advisable to alter surfaces, change handles, or perhaps use paint. Does anyone have experience or can offer concrete tips on how to update the classic Hemnes series in a modern and stylish way without completely losing the character of the furniture?

Hey! I think it’s great that you want to incorporate the Hemnes furniture, as it really has a great basic design! 😊 To make it look more modern, you could, for example, replace the handles—matte black or brass metal handles instantly add a sleek, modern touch! Painting the surfaces is also a brilliant idea; using white or very light gray tones makes everything feel much lighter and fresher. Try adding some color accents too, like a shelf or drawer in a soft pastel shade—this brightens things up and works really well with Scandinavian styles! If you’re up for it, you could even sand the wood lightly and then treat it with a matte clear coat, which preserves the texture but makes it look less rustic. Don’t be afraid to experiment, it’s really fun and the results can be quite impressive! 🎉

That is a fitting approach. Additionally, I recommend:
- Lightly sanding the surface with fine sandpaper and then applying a light acrylic paint to soften the rustic character.
- Using minimalist design handles that align with the lines of your other furnishings.
- If suitable, adding open shelving elements or glass inserts to create a lighter feel.

Light colors are very suitable because they visually enlarge the space and make the furniture seem less bulky. Redesigning the furniture doesn’t have to destroy its character but can modernize it deliberately – I recommend testing on sample pieces or small areas first.

Change the handles, paint surfaces white or light colors, possibly apply a matte clear coat. You could also add accents with films or small details in black.

A systematic approach helps here:
- Develop a color scheme that fits your modern Scandinavian style (very light, subtle, possibly complemented by accent colors)
- Add material accents: incorporate natural, lightweight materials (such as glass or metal) through changes like new handles or additional shelves
- Avoid too many elaborate details; modernize subtly with minimal accessories
- Surface treatment: sand down the furniture and then apply a matte paint to remove the rustic shine

This creates a clear contrast between the classic bulkiness and modern style without completely redesigning the furniture.

Additionally, you could line the insides of drawers or doors with fabric or wallpaper, which isn’t noticeable at first but adds a unique character.
