Hello everyone,

I am looking for efficient ways to organize my IKEA Besta drawers with suitable dividers to achieve better clarity and order. My main goal is to store various smaller items separately and neatly without them shifting around. I am interested in solutions using both standard IKEA parts as well as tips for custom cuts or modular systems.

If you also have advice on how to best measure before installation and which materials are suitable for drawer dividers, I would appreciate that as well.

How do you organize your Besta drawers with dividers to maximize both clarity and flexibility? Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions!

Hello Ixtesar,

I am familiar with this issue and have developed a proven approach to making Besta drawers with dividers truly practical:

- First, be sure to measure the internal dimensions of the drawers very precisely. This is crucial to ensure the dividers fit exactly later on.
- IKEA offers the "VARIERA" system, which provides good basic modules for drawer inserts. These can be easily clicked in and repositioned.
- For more flexible solutions, I recommend using MDF or acrylic sheets that you can cut yourself. With a utility knife or a fine saw, you can make strips that are fixed with small brackets or glue.
- To avoid common mistakes: Make sure the dividers are not too close together, or you will quickly lose overview. It’s better to leave some space so items fit well.
- My tip: Also use small containers or boxes as subunits inside the drawer, which further improves organization.

In summary: Exact measurements + modular or custom-fit inserts = perfect clarity. If you have questions about materials or tools, feel free to ask!

Hello Ixtesar,

I want to take this a step further because the topic of compartments offers a lot of depth. If you really want to optimize your drawers, I recommend a multi-level approach that includes both planning and material knowledge:

- First, you should analyze exactly what you want to store in the drawers (type, size, weight of the items). This will determine the depth and width of the compartments.
- In addition to MDF, particularly sturdy plastic panels with a smooth surface are suitable materials. Plexiglass looks nice but is often expensive and not always necessary.
- I have had good experiences with custom-milled compartment systems. You can use CAD programs to plan the exact position of the dividers and have them milled later by a CNC service.
- Of course, this is somewhat more elaborate, but extremely efficient and precise. For DIY, a combination of fixed longitudinal and adjustable cross slats, which can be locked in place with small plastic clips, is usually sufficient.
- Another important point is securing the dividers. They must not shift; otherwise, the clever compartment design is useless.

Therefore, my question is: What are the exact dimensions of the drawers? And which items do you want to organize specifically?

This would help me suggest tailored solutions or even templates for cutting plans.

I recommend using IKEA Variera inserts directly and combining them with small storage boxes. This way, you quickly gain an overview and can adjust the layout if needed.

That’s a good starting point. I would add that the Variera inserts come in different sizes. If you measure carefully before buying, you can use them very flexibly for your own drawer.

I agree here; smooth surfaces especially prevent small parts from getting stuck. Plexiglass looks nice, but in my experience, it’s not absolutely necessary since it’s more difficult to work with.

My tip: If you don’t want to buy premium products, look for inexpensive sorting trays or food storage containers that fit well into drawers and provide separation that way. Sometimes a simple trick like this brings more order than completely custom-built dividers.
