Hello everyone,

I am planning to get an IKEA PAX wardrobe, but there is a special consideration regarding installation: the walls in my apartment are made of drywall (gypsum board) with no visible wooden or metal studs, at least not where I want to mount the wardrobe. My question is:

Is it possible to securely attach IKEA PAX wardrobes to drywall so that they can withstand heavier loads and remain stable over time? What mounting methods or special anchors would you recommend for this? Are there any safety concerns or risks I should be aware of before installing such a large piece of furniture on drywall?

Thank you for your experiences and advice!

Directly attaching PAX to drywall is only secure when using appropriate expansion anchors or cavity anchors. Metal Molly bolts or special drywall anchors are best. It is important to secure the cabinet at multiple points to prevent it from tipping over.

Hello Mustafa,

First of all: Your question is very important because drywall partitions have significantly lower load-bearing capacity than solid walls. When mounting IKEA PAX wardrobes on drywall, you need to consider a few things:

- First, check if there are metal studs or wooden battens behind the drywall. This makes installation much easier because you can screw directly into these support structures.

- If no studs are present, special cavity anchors must be used. These include metal molly bolts or toggle bolts that expand behind the panel.

- Pay attention to the load capacity of the anchors – a PAX wardrobe can weigh several kilograms depending on its size and contents. Expect at least 15-25 kg (33-55 lbs) load per fixing point.

- Ideally, secure the wardrobe against the wall not only at the top but also at the bottom to prevent tipping. Additional floor fixing or framing between walls can help.

- If possible, you can also mount a wooden batten on the wall, fixed with several anchors. Then attach the wardrobe to this batten—this distributes the forces better.

One more question: Have you verified that there really are no studs behind your drywall? Sometimes tapping along the wall or using a stud finder device can reliably indicate the studs.

I recommend measuring carefully and, if possible, consulting a professional for an assessment. Safety should always come first.

Hey Mustafa!

I also mounted my PAX on drywall and am really happy with the result! 👍 It’s important not to skimp on the anchors – get high-quality metal molly bolts! This way, the cabinet will hold really firmly, even when you open the door or load and unload items.

Don’t let yourself be discouraged; if you do it right, it’s definitely enjoyable! Good luck!! 🎉

Hello Mustafa,

I would like to add a brief step-by-step guide that might help you:

1. First, use a stud finder to locate metal or wooden studs in the wall. If you find any, secure your fittings there.

2. For drywall without studs: Use only approved hollow wall anchors, such as metal molly bolts or toggle bolts, not simple expansion anchors.

3. Distribute the attachment points as widely as possible across the back panel of the cabinet – at least four, preferably more.

4. Avoid uneven loading. When you load the cabinet, consider whether the weight is distributed evenly.

5. Install an anti-tip device at the bottom of the cabinet, if possible on the floor or wall, to prevent tipping over.

6. When tightening screws, make sure the anchors are properly engaged and no hollow space is overlooked; otherwise, the fixture will not hold.

Summary: A secure attachment is possible, but choosing the right anchors and properly distributing the attachment points is crucial. Safety should always be the top priority.

Hopefully, this helps you.

That sounds very encouraging, especially since I’m always skeptical when heavy furniture is mounted on drywall.

I understand the concern, particularly when you consider what could happen if such a large cabinet falls or comes loose. Maybe you could share how long your cabinet has been installed? That would definitely help many people gain confidence in the mounting.

I really appreciate how some forum members understand how important it is to feel secure when installing things yourself.
