Hello everyone, I am planning to attach BILLY shelves from IKEA to my drywall. Since these walls are made of gypsum board, I am concerned about the stability and safety of the mounting. My main question is: How can I securely fasten BILLY shelves to drywall so that they reliably support both the weight of the shelves and any books or items placed on them, without causing damage to the wall or dangerous pull-out of the anchors? I have heard that special anchors or even metal anchors might be necessary. Are there recommendations for specific types of anchors, drilling procedures, or perhaps the need for additional reinforcement behind the wall? I appreciate any advice that can help me install the shelves safely and permanently.

Hello Tipau, your concern is completely justified. Drywall panels are delicate and require the correct fastening technique for BILLY shelves. Basically, you have the following options:

1. Choose suitable anchors: Metal expansion anchors or toggle anchors (also called hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts) work best. These expand behind the panel and distribute the load.

2. Pay attention to drill hole size: The hole should match the anchor size exactly so that the anchor grips properly and does not fit too loosely.

3. Increase the number of fastening points: The more anchors you use, the better the loads are distributed.

4. Check the stud framework: If possible, try to screw the shelves directly into the wall studs (metal studs or wooden battens). This is the safest option.

5. Alternative reinforcement: If fastening to the studs is not possible, you can permanently attach a wooden batten behind the drywall and mount the shelf to it.

A common mistake is drilling aggressively, causing the anchor to lose grip. Don’t do that! Instead, drill slowly and insert the anchors precisely.

Summary: Use toggle anchors appropriate for the weight, check the load capacity, and if possible, screw into the stud or wooden substructure. Then the BILLY shelf will hold securely 🙂

That is an accurate summary. Additionally, I would like to clarify that drywall panels alone cannot bear heavy loads. The standard insulation and the framing behind are crucial for load capacity.

For the loads of a fully loaded BILLY shelf, I recommend the following approach:
- Identify the position of the metal or wooden studs behind the panel using an appropriate stud finder.
- Attach the shelf brackets directly to these studs, if possible using spax screws.
- For areas without studs, only cavity anchors (toggle bolts) should be used; be sure to pay close attention to the maximum load rating provided by the anchor manufacturer.

Avoid using simple plastic anchors, as they are often insufficient and pose a high risk of wall damage.

Additionally, horizontal reinforcements, such as a wooden batten clamped between the studs, can be installed if heavier loads are expected.

A proper combination of anchors and the use of load-bearing structures ensures long-term safety.

Hello Tipau, in addition to the helpful contributions from SauDietmar and RENMA, I would like to add the following, as the topic of fastening to drywall is often underestimated.

1. Anchor type: For BILLY shelves, metal toggle anchors are highly recommended because they provide the best pull-out and shear strength in hollow walls. Plastic hollow wall anchors are usually only suitable for lighter loads.

2. Substructure: If you frequently load the shelf with heavy books, check whether you can attach the shelf panel to metal or wooden studs. A useful tip is to drill multiple anchor holes before mounting and use a stud finder to locate profiles, as they are often not exactly where you expect them to be.

3. Load distribution: Distribute the screw holes as widely as possible at the bottom and top to optimize load distribution. Also use the hole points indicated by the manufacturer on the shelf’s back panel.

4. Pre-drilling and screwing: Always drill holes to the exact depth to avoid damaging the anchor. Insert screws slowly.

5. Safety: After installation, always check whether the shelf is wobbly. It’s better to use one or two extra anchors than too few.

Yes, exactly, specially made metal toggle anchors are the safe choice for drywall.

If you have any more questions or want a recommendation for a specific anchor brand, feel free to ask.
