ᐅ How can I reinforce Ikea Hemnes furniture to support heavier loads?

Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question regarding my Ikea Hemnes furniture. I use several Hemnes cabinets and dressers in my workshop, but over time I have reached the limits of their load capacity, especially when storing heavier items. Although the furniture has a sturdy design, it consists of relatively thin wood panels and simple joints, so I am specifically looking for ways to reinforce the furniture without completely rebuilding it or buying something entirely new. I am interested in both mechanical reinforcements — for example, additional cross braces, metal brackets, or new screws — as well as ideas for strengthening the joinery, such as gluing or special dowels. Has anyone had experience reinforcing Hemnes furniture or similar Ikea models to consistently support heavier loads? Which materials and techniques have proven effective, and what should I pay particular attention to in order to avoid damaging the furniture? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to quickly mention that I successfully reinforced the back panel of my Hemnes wardrobe with a 6 mm (1/4 inch) thick plywood sheet. This distributes the load very well and stops any wobbling. Important: make sure to cut the panel accurately and screw it in securely. Additionally, I added extra metal brackets to the shelves – since then, my wardrobe has been able to hold much more weight without any issues! It’s really satisfying to upgrade furniture like this!

I really appreciate how you share practical tips here! However, I’m also wondering how to preserve the original look of Hemnes furniture when reinforcing it. When using metal brackets or additional wooden supports, it can quickly look makeshift. Do you have any advice on how to do this neatly or disguise it? I have a lot of Hemnes furniture at home and want to make it more sturdy, but I’d like to keep the appearance as close to original as possible.

That’s a great point! If you want to preserve the appearance, you can install brackets and reinforcements on the inside where they won’t be visible. For the screws, I recommend using ones with matching-colored heads so they blend better with the existing look. For additional cross supports, you can use veneer wood or fine sandpaper plus matching paint to visually integrate them. You can also reinforce the back panel from the inside, keeping the exterior completely original. This way, the look is preserved while the stability is noticeably improved.
