I have noticed that the white paint or coating on my IKEA Malm nightstand is peeling off in several areas. This especially happens on the edges and the most frequently used surfaces. I suspect that the top layer no longer adheres properly, possibly due to moisture or wear and tear. My question is: What is the best way to renovate a MALM nightstand so that it looks like new again? Is it enough to completely sand off the damaged paint and repaint it, or should a special primer or sealant be used? Has anyone had experience renovating IKEA furniture, specifically MALM nightstands, and can share tips on the process or suitable materials? Thank you in advance!

It is best to first completely remove the peeling paint. Then lightly sand the surface so that the new paint adheres well. Apply a primer, then paint with a finish suitable for furniture. Finally, I would recommend a clear sealant to make it more durable.

Exactly, that is the most important prerequisite. I would recommend using fine sandpaper (grit 120-180) for this, so you don’t damage the surface too much.

Also: MALM nightstands are usually made of particleboard with a foil or melamine coating that peels off. Once the coating is completely removed, you often have a rough, uneven surface that should be smoothed out well with a primer.

A special wood primer for particleboard is advisable because it prevents the board from absorbing moisture and provides good adhesion for the paint.

For painting itself, acrylic paint works very well because it has low odor and dries quickly. I would ventilate the room thoroughly beforehand and do intermediate sanding—this will make the nightstand really smooth.

Finally, you can apply a matte or satin finish sealant to protect and improve the appearance of the table.

If possible, I would also clean the nightstand from dust and grease before painting, for example with some spirits or diluted alcohol, which further improves adhesion. Good luck!

My question is: What is the best way to renovate a MALM bedside table so it looks like new again?

I completely understand how frustrating it is when the beautiful surface of your bedside table gets damaged. I felt the same way and was intimidated by the amount of work involved.

At first, I also wondered whether I should do it myself, since there seem to be many steps, or just buy a new one. But after doing some research and taking it one step at a time, I actually enjoyed the process and felt like I was giving the piece a second life.

I think it’s important not to stress and to prepare well: so plan enough time, get the right tools and materials, and take short breaks to catch your breath now and then 🙂

If you like, feel free to share how your renovation goes. That way we all learn and don’t feel so alone with the little challenges. Good luck!
